Oil and high temps
« on: July 06, 2012, 02:51:20 PM »

I installed a high-volume oil pump in my '04 SEEG. :pumpkin:  I was on a trip this past week with the air temps of 104.  I had oil coming out of the air cleaner and spraying the right side of the bike (my lady and myself too!).

The dealer says newer CVO's are doing this when the temp is so high.  I need a cure before Sturgis or she's not going.

Anyone else have this happen/cure?   >:(

Are you sure your oil isn't slightly overfilled and blowing out thru your breather?

Most run 3.5 quarts of oil - a half quart less than the service manual calls for...  Running 4 quarts can cause your issue...

I'm running right at the "add quart" line.

Agree, I always run less oil in the summer due to the heat (expansion and all). I also run the Zippers Max flow air filter (started out with SE air filter) that has upgraded oil bypass (I never did get a look at the stock air filter/bypass setup).

Ride safe!

If you are running at the add line, overfill is not your issue.  Is the filter saturated with oil?  Over time, my '06 SEUC did that and would drip some until I cleaned the filter again.  Depending on what kind of cover you have on the filter, you can stick a maxi pad to the bottom inside of the cover and it will absorb the excess.  It works...

Or, you can plumb it down to a catch can and eliminate it altogether.

Likely oil coming from the breather as previously stated.  If you have the original air cleaner, oil from the breather is directed to the air intake of the throttle body.  Oil mist accumulates on the air filter and eventually enough accumulates where it drips from the filter and blows all over the right side of the bike when riding. This condition can be more pronounced when you overfill your oil (1/2 mark on dipstick when hot is ideal) and/or when you run long periods at highway speeds

There are a number of remedies, most require routing oil from the breathers to a canister/filter or vented to ground somewhere.  My personal favorite is the "Bluegrass" breather vents offered by Kuryakyn.  I found this system to be the best looking and maintainance free solution available.  I've been running mine for five years and not a single drop of oil to be seen.

have you replaced the umbrella valves in the lower rocker box I had mine do this at 53xxx miles and just replaced them and the problem went away?
