Clunking Tranny
« on: July 16, 2012, 01:54:55 PM »

My 2011 seems to have a very loud clunk when shifting, the dealer has checked it out but tells me it in normal.Who would guess. Has anyone had any problems like this?

Try changing trans fluid and switch to Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof.

A clunk when shifting from neutral to first is common and normal in most cases, but not when shifting through the other gears.  Are you talking about just neutral to first, first to second, or all gears?

Neutral to first will clunk or even grind sometimes.  I always park in first gear and start it in gear. Just keep you foot on the brake because if the clutch plates are stuck (which they most likely will be) there will be a bit of a jump when the bike starts.

Does it clunk when going from neutral to first.  :nixweiss:  Heck ya,  :2vrolijk_21:  it's a Harley. If you hear no sound, take it in for service.   :D

I just put the Redline in my trans over the weekend and it is a huge improvement in noise and smoothness to the tranny!!! :2vrolijk_21: Plus finding neutral is a lot easier!! :orange:

When I start the bike up cold I let it warm up a bit and seem to always get a hard /clunky shift into first gear, as the bike warms up it improves and the shifting is much smoother.

I agree Redline Shockproof helps, I also changed to Redline primary fluid.  For the summers here in Florida I run Redline 20-60 engine oil, didnt quiet the engine but did raise the HOT idle oil pressure from very low 3-5psi to 7-8psi.  The only problem with Shockproof is IT STINKS!  Every so often when I come to a stop when the bike is really hot I get a whiff of stinky Shockproof.  But I agree they all clunk!!!

I use formula x in my primary an transmission. I have found that I have to pull the clutch lever all the way so it touches the grip. That seems to reduce the clunk a little after a little running with clutch released before I drop it into 1st gear. 1200 miles on mine.

With mine, there is no rhyme or reason to it...sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.  Usually, after the bike sits in the garage for a few days, it doesn't.  Otherwise, it usually does.  Don't worry about it, just do it.  I use Redline in all holes...different product for different holes.  It helps, but there's no cure.

I used Red Line primary in my last 3 , but honestly, they all clunked just as bad as with stock fluid.  When I went to the BDL +1 clutch, I took some good advice and used the Harley Formula Plus fluid.  Quieter and smoother than the Red Line in my previous bikes.  Can't tell you why or whatever, but it is smoother for me.  Mobil 1 in the motor and Shockproof in the tranny, but forgive me, Harley Formula Plus in the primary...

OLDERGUY, in my 09SEUC I use HD Formula Plus and usually pull the clutch lever in and release it about 3 or 4 times before shifting into first when the bike is warming up. That seems to quiet the clunk when shifting into first. Regarding the trans I use Amsoil 75-140 mixed with six ounces of Lucas oil treatment. Seems that 5th gear is a lot quieter now. CAHDBIKER.
