Just have a question. I have a 2010 SESG with 38,000 miles on her. Bike has run perfect up to 2 weeks ago. Started running a little sluggish. Then got bad enough it would not hardly pull a hill.  Took to the dealer today and they said the rear cylinder has 20% leak down and the engine will have to be taken apart. Has anybody else had a similar problem? Thanks

Where is the leakage occuring?  Intake valve?  Exhaust valve?  Rings?  They should be able to tell you...

I'd suspect a valve or valve seat...

I'd also ask them for the leakdown result of the front cylinder...

Service dept said front cylinder checked OK. Did not say what the leak down was on the front. Suppose to look into it more tomorrow to find out what the problem is.

There have been occurrences of valves sticking in the valve guides, then contacting a piston enough to slightly bend the valve resulting with your conditions...  Typically an exhaust valve.  A stethoscope in the exhaust port while pressurizing the cylinder with air (as with the leak down test) would result in you hearing air leakage.  You could do the same check for an intake valve listening thru the throttle body (with the throttle body held open).

While the source of leakage could be rings, it's more likely to be a valve...

My '08 road king did similar (along with other things). They went from the front cylinder to the rear, back and forth. Bent a valve. Heads were redone and cams were replaced because they were stamped wrong from the factory. No more problems. Be aware that the motor company and/or the insurance company will try to rebuild only the rear cylinder. Personally, I think that is half a$$ for such a nice bike.
Good Luck!

When a leakdown test is performed, you can pinpoint the problem, prior to pulling it down.
Just had the 3rd CVO 110" in 10 months come in, with the rear intake lifter wheel fubared, or MIA.
This one was driven to the point, where there is debris scattered throughout the entire engine.

Well, I got the bad news today. Dealer disassembled the engine and found the cam chain tensioners failed and has put metal debris throughout the engine. They will need to completely rebuild the engine. They said the metal debris damaged most of the moving parts in the engine. I asked why they were not replacing the engine and they said it was about $1500 more to replace then to rebuild. Extended warranty will pay to rebuild only. The bad part is that the engine did not make any abnormal noises to indicate any failure other than the low power problem I was having the last 2 weeks. They said it will take about 2 weeks to get parts, rebuild the engine and get it back together.

I thought the new style cam plate and hydraulic cam tensioners were not problematic.  38000 miles is significant, but I thought they did not need the attention of the first gen spring tensioners.

If they are going to split the cases, you might want to consider having the crankshaft trued and welded, and Timken installed.  You'd have to pay the difference, and it would mean just a bit more downtime, but in the long run, it would be worth it if you plan to keep the bike for a few more years.  The ESP people shouldn't have a problem with you paying a little out of pocket to make the engine MORE reliable.

My thoughts also on the tensioners. Thought the new tensioners should have lasted longer than 38,000 miles. I replace the tensioners in my SEEG at 30,000 miles.
The dealer said they are in stalling a new crank kit during the rebuild. Probably will not have it more than another year so I'll just go with stock replacement parts.

Sorry to hear about your motor issues and hope your dealer does a great job on the rebuild.

Stopped by the dealer on Saturday. Looked at all the damaged parts. There should be a recommended service interval for the tensioner. Parts should be in this week. Hope to get her back soon.

Wow.  This sounds like a first for the new style tensioners.
