cracked Y pipe
« on: July 20, 2012, 12:51:10 PM »

just found i have a cracked Y pipe - its still under esp so will be fixed for 50 bux - however....

they told me to go ahead and ride it, it wont hurt anything - true?
i read that Y pipes only last for 20k - does this mean that even though im perfectly happy with stock exhaust im going to be looking for pipe parts in 20k miles?
do aftermarket pipes last longer or is this just a irritation that will persist.

i never broke any shovel pipe parts so this is new to me.

Pretty common problem. I've welded several up.

Look at the front motor mount.  May also need to be replaced.....

Fullsac makes a nice, simple true duel set-up that trades the y for a J

That's what I did years ago after cracking a few stock pipes.
I've had a few welded up and they still crack.

Assuming you have a closed-loop EFI model and you're still running closed-loop, I'd disagree with them.  It might not actually hurt anything to ride that way, but I'd speculate you'll be throwing excess fuel into the rear cylinder, perhaps damaging amounts.

well the crack is getting much wider very fast, its actually loud - started as a pff sound,  yesterday it started popping and making noise on decel like a bike that is way out of tune does.

so im going to park it till they can fix it

it helps that i am ready to go today and its pouring rain

 :(

got it back today

so quiet, so much better running and starting...... seems like lots more power...

im wondering how long its been cracked - the only reason i found it is i rode the bike a couple blocks with my helmet off - i dont hear well to start with.

my friends say its less than half as loud as they remember

wonder what it will do to milage - supposedly a crack will make it use more fuel

*sigh*

im going to round up a spare since 07 & 08 are odd balls. & im going to pay more attention in the future.....
