True Duels
« on: July 22, 2012, 06:35:04 PM »

I had Rinehart 4 in slip ons my 2011 sg. I just had Rush headers put on.It has made a lot of good difference. Lots of low end pick up and alround get up and go. No problems starting and running ,no backfiring. My ? is why would I need to put a tuner on and what would I gain from it?
          Thanks Older Guy

The reason that you should is because the EFI is quite good for a motorcycle, but it does not have the ability to actually measure the amount of air flowing through the engine under various operational conditions.  Instead it relies on programming variables to tell it how much air is flowing whenever.  You've changed the characteristics of the airflow, thus you need to reprogram the ECM with good/pertinent information.  The system has an adaptability mechanism but it's not intended for trying to "fix" bad programming/parts combinations.  Instead it's for keeping the correct tune correct as different fuel is used and/or as the fuel injectors and/or pressure regulator characteristics change over time, and it works best for this when the airflow characteristics match the programming in the ECM.

You can approximate proper ECM programming by using a piggyback controller of some sort, but it's not the same and it's not as good as altering the ECM programming directly.

What do tuners cost, and I think Harley makes one? I have heard bad things about tuners and people having to change maps all the time.
       Thanks John

I have also had people tell me they heard "bad" things about _____________ tuner. I suggest that if they are concerned about it, don't purchase it..No one has told you any "good" things??
On the other hand, if you want to make your OWN decision, read, do research, talk to your buddies, ride MY bike and take the plunge.
I  really  really  really  really LIKE my tuner. I let select friends ride my '10 just to compare with what THEY have. Usually makes them pick up the phone and order same.
Depending what you want, cost can be $200 and up.

If people are constantly changing maps, they either don't know what they are doing or they are constantly changing things that affect air flow or fuel flow on the bike.  Once you get the ECM calibration (map) dialed in for your particular combination of parts, you shouldn't need to change that calibration again unless you make another change to the engine.

Glens gave you the straight scoop on why you should get the ECM calibration tweaked to match your current setup.

I put V&H true dual headers and Freedom Racing mufflers. It was strongly suggested that a SE racer tuner be installed. Bike was Dyno tuned. Runs and sounds awesome.

The other benefit is that the tuner will set the Air-Fuel-Ratio (AFR) a little richer, which will bring down the engine temp.  The factory sets them lean to pass EPA / emissions.
