Question About Adding Slip Ons
« on: July 23, 2012, 04:42:21 AM »

I have a 12 CVO Street Glide that is all stock.  It is way too quiet for me and I would like to add either Rhinehart or V & H slip ons.  If that is all that I change now, will that be a problem?  I want to avoid it running badly, decel pop, etc.  I plan on replacing the headpipes and getting tuned at a later time.  Thanks.

You can do that I done it on two CVOs that I had and no problems with it running good and sounded a lot better, I used the V&H on both bikes.

You may be able to get away with doing it but it's not the proper way  :nervous:

It'll work okay to only change the mufflers.  Lots of folks do it.  But it'll work better when you get some headers without the cat and an interface to re-calibrate your ECM.

Is there a reflash that the dealer should do when changing mufflers like the stage I reflash you get on the standard bikes when you go to the stage I air intake and mufflers?  I know, it's probably a stupid question, but I'm a newb with the CVOs.

It doesnt say what bike you have.  I wasnt sure if you had made up your mind on mufflers yet.  I was also looking at replacing mine.  But I really like the looks of the factory one.  I have not ordered mine yet.  But if you noticed a lot of guys on here run fullsac baffles.  that go into the factory muffler case.   Pretty easy job to do.
They have videos posted on this site in the fuel and intake section.  just have to look a little bit.  The man who runs it his name is steve.  I even sent him a message on here and he was able to get back with me in a day.  then they also make a x-pipe header.  makes a bunch of power.  He also sells a tunner which I was already in a toss up about getting.  Just do some reading around on here for a few hour.  Open up a few tabs and look at some of the vendors that people on here deal with.  you will see every one is very nice.  by the way.  them baffles are more than have the price than slip ons and you have money left over to put towards the header or the turner.  All I can say about this sight is I am on the computer now more than my girlfriend is on facebook.  Dont even turn the tv on anymore.  This site is full of useful information.

I did make up my mind on the mufflers.  I got the rinehart slip ons and they should be delivered today.  I'm just hoping that I can get by without decel popping.  I will eventually change out the headpipes and get a tuner, but I'm hoping that I can put that off until next spring.

I have a friend with a 11 sg with 103 engine and he put on rineharts with no changes to nothing else.  He hasnt noticed any pop on decel he really didnt even notice any noticable power diff. either.  just a little more noise. but I am pretty sure your going to like the tuner when you do that next spring.  keep reading around on here and ask questions.  the people on here are awsome and know alot.  they dont mind sharing either.  But also take into consideration.  you like rineharts.  some people dont like the sound and they have their opinion and thats ok.  some guys will try to convince you that there way is the best way but alot is on your riding style and what you want.  So always keep that in perspective.  I love this site.   I just keep reading through older post from even years back and there is info that may pertain to you bike.

The CVO's are already "Stage 1" from the factory, so I doubt there is another street legal calibration they could download to your bike.

If all you are doing is changing the mufflers, you should be safe for the short term.  The stock engine management system has the ability to make small corrections to the fuel settings automatically as a way to compensate over time for changes to things like fuel pressure, injector flow, air flow due to air filter maintenance or lack thereof, or changes in the oxygenate content of the fuel.  This automatic system is not meant to compensate for modifications, and I wouldn't recommend making changes and never getting the tune updated.  But for a minor change like the one you propose, you should be OK until you get the bike tuned.  As for the decel pop issue, that has a lot more to do with the design of the muffler you choose and how well you avoid any air leaks when you install them.  I recommend using the original equipment style clamps, not the narrow band clamps folks like V&H include with their pipes.

I had Rinehart slipons put on my bike in 09 even before the bike left the dealership, I don't even know what the stock mufflers sounded like because I just left them at the dealer. I ran them for three years up until last month when I replaced the header (Rush) and got a proper tune. Can't believe how much better the bike runs but and an increase in rumble, unfortunately, I'm getting noticed by the law a little more, so I tend not to bring attention to myself in the city, on the highway, definately a change in loudness compared to without the header change. I'll take the loudness and increased efficiency anyday. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for all of the replies.  And yes, there is a lot of good info on this forum.  I've had quite a few HDs, but this is my first CVO.  The pipes should be arriving today and I've been watching the tracking on the UPS site.  As soon as it says they're delivered, I'm heading to the HD shop for two new clamps and heading home to put them on.  Thanks again.
