On a Road Trip and noticed cracking on D408F
« on: July 23, 2012, 06:04:56 PM »

Down in TN right now- going to NC, VA then back home thru PA and NY. I changed all my fluids, had the 25 k inspection done, along with a brake fluid change, so I thought my bike was tip top, but today I just noticed the sidewall is cracked. I've read this is a known issue.

I bought the tire 2 months ago at Gowanda HD in NY and it has less than 2000 miles on it.

Long story short , Knoxville HD is telling me Gowanda has to pay the bill for the tire plus their labour then they will ship the defective tire back to Gowanda for free, so that gowanda can claim the tire cost from Dunlop, as HD only covers tires on new bikes.

Gowanda tells me any dealer should cover it under warranty. Both dealers say calling HD customer service wont accomplish anything since Dunlop has to cover it.

So, all I know is I need to replace the tire but I still have to sort out whos paying for it. I have to call Gowanda back tomorrow to see if they will do pay Knoxville to do it.

Guess Ill see what happens tomorrow. I think in the meantime I will HD customer service for the hell of it.

I'm my opinion any dealer that sells this tire should be able to replace it and turn it into Dunlop.  8)

The dealer who has the bike right now is FOS and is trying to stick it up your azz.  I assume you bought a Harley branded Dunlop tire from your dealer, correct?  The warranty should still be handled by Harley, just like they handle all the other service part warranty stuff.  If Dunlop eventually has to pay Harley for the replacement is not your concern or responsibility.

Definitely call H-D Customer Disservice and ask them to intervene.

I called HD customer service who told me to have Knoxville call them in the AM.

Knoxville told me "their policy" is that they wont eat the labor cost on a tire they didnt sell. Serv Mgr even told me that on a defective tire, the labor would come out of their warranty labor hours pool, which they reserve for their own customers. I suspect customer service will convince them to look after me, which is the right thing to do.

Have them check the manufacture date code on the tire. Just because it's "new" to your bike doesn't mean that it hasn't set on the shelf for some years.

Had the SERG serviced at the dealer last week.  While there, I met a '12 Road Glide owner with onty 800 miles on his bike.  His 408F sidewall was cracked nearly all around the right side of the tire and half the left.  Sounds like there maybe a bad batch of tires out there.

So nobody wanted to pay the labor since the tire was warrantied thru Dunlop and not HD.

Fortunately Knoxville had a labor special for tire installs so it only cost me $47 out the door for a new tire.

Im happy enough and learned the lesson of inspecting not only tire pressure and treadwear, but also to keep an eye on the sidewalls. This should remind everyone else to do the same.

Good lesson learned, thanks for sharing.  Many of us are headed for Sturgis over the next few weeks, a good pre-ride checklist can prevent a lot of disruption to our travel plans.
