Suspension setting cvo street glide 2012
« on: July 26, 2012, 06:31:07 PM »

Hello,

I recently bought a cvo sg 2012 and the rear suspension bottoms out to easily (harsh) and is very annoying? I already increased the preload to the middle on the left side without any significant result. I am in rider gear about 200 pounds so not that heavy. Does anyone know what to do (turn it all the way up, firmer springs, thicker oil or whatever) and is this a common problem just like the heat issue? I can not imagine that you need to upgrade the suspension after paying so much cash!

Can I fine tune the front suspension also?

Thank you.

You can crank the left rear shock all the way up to 19 turns, to make the suspension stiffer. I have mine set on 9, right in the middle. I weigh 170, and my rear suspension has never bottomed out - even when riding 2-up.

The owners manual discusses this, and has a weight table to tell you where to adjust the shock. The progressive spring shocks on the CVO SG/RG are actually very good. No need to spend money replacing them.

Now, the FRONT suspension is an entirely different matter. It is not adjustable. I chose to go with the Traxxion Dynamics AK-20 cartridge forks as a complete internal replacement for the old tractor technology damper-rod front forks. Progressive offers a less expensive fork upgrade option that many here have installed, and the MoCo also now offers a fork upgrade kit, too.

Took delivery last month of my FLHXSE3 & rode 1100 miles before leaving for Sturgis this week,,, I had a set of progressive mono tubes installed' lowered front 1 inch to sit level front & rear....no comparison in ride quality from the stock suspension.... On the rears on the other hand I'm still getting to know them. I weigh 170 ride mostly solo & adjusted them from zero to 1/2 way dialed up & feel no difference in ride quality, in fact the rears seem much harsher than the front now since the mono tubes. I do think the rears are a quality schock, just trying to still find the balance of that happy medium.

Thanks for the information. I will increase the preload and see what happens. By the way i did not get a handbook of a cvo so i can not find any information about the spring preload setting.

I heard about the heat issue and i already experience the enormous heat under my ass. Especially in busy traffic. I have a stock bike with the Vanes & Hines Monster slip ons. What is the best way to reduce the heat? Get rid of the cat or go for aftermarket head pipes like the Fullsac x pipes?

I come from a softtail (Fatboy2003) and i need some help to fine tune this beast. I do not know any riders with the same bike to compare and to discuss and going online like a forum like this can help me to understand the ins and outs and the do's and don't.

Thanks.

You already have the slip-ons, so you could just go for the Fullsac headpipe and the TTS tuner (with a map from Steve at Fullsac) and the heat should be better. Not great....but better than stock.

The stock suspension, front and rear pretty much sucks.  Ohlins shocks are very nice, I can't wait for them to build a cartridge kit for the forks.  They Ohlins USA guys will be in the Sturgis area, I'll stop in and see what they have planned for the forks.  I'll probably have them install shocks while I'm there.

The fullsac x pipe is great, just did the install, very straightforward and had the bike tuned.  Great torque and it's running much cooler.  I kept the stock pipes, I like there look and the sound with the x pipe is just about right for me.

I have tried just about every setting solo...and 5 with a BSR....none impressed me at all. The next setting I'll try is aside. Still deciding on which way to go for replacements. Was happy with the 940s on my '08.
