Primary noise, how did those squirrels get in there?

Well i got on here today looking for an answer to my new noise, by reading all the topics i think i have it narrowed down to compensator sprocket. So here goes let me know what you think. It is a screeching noise, only on accel in 2-5 gears, loud in 2nd and 3rd, lot more quiet in 4th and 5th but still there. only on accel, also as speed increases the pitch gets higher. no noise on cruise or decel, worse when cold. no noise with clutch in and revving engine. So i believe that rules out the engine and trans. must be in the primary. Its so loud its hard to tell where its coming from, sound like its everywhere. My question is, it looks like all the compensator problems are with newer bikes, so is that problem common with 03 SERK also? All info appreciated, I don't want to dive into the wrong part of the bike and waist a bunch of time and money. Thanks.

if it doesn't make the noise with the clutch pulled in, it's in the transmission. Primary chain and compensator is rotating anytime the engine is running. My guess from what you are describing is a bearing failure in the transmission. Pull the plug and inspect the oil. Transmission oil should be very clear with little or nothing in it. if you see metallic pieces good indication of a bearing failure.

More likely a bearing/bearing race problem.  They have been known to walk on the mainshaft on the older models, eventually destroying the seals and ultimately the bearings.

I was having a terrible noise after having the inner primary bearing replaced on my 2008 and the dealer just could not come up with an answer.  After giving up on them, I pulled the primary cover myself and discovered that the chain tensioner was put back with the rear bolt missing the hole in the spacer and leaving the spacer lodged in the primary. This allowed the tensioner to ratchit back and forth , tight and loose, causing the hammering noise. I pulled out the loose spacer, replaced the tensioner with a new one since it was scored, and all noise gone.  I'll tell you that there are many incompetent techs in the Harley service departments and just as many service writers who don't have a clue.
