« on: July 28, 2012, 01:02:51 AM »

Ok I'm new to the forum and also new to the world of baggers :). I have had sprinters and sporty's but this is my first street glide and first CVO so far I love this bike. Now the ? I have for everyone is I'm looking to get a new shield but want some of you alls opinions please. First highth ? Second tint shade ? I'm looking at the klock werks shield I really like the style and looks like may perform well. I like the stock one but when I ride it's just a little to short for me. Thanks and love this great place so far. Great wealth of knowledge stacked into one forum it's great.

Welcome to the site. Windshield selection can be complicated by many things. If you asked 50 members here you will probably get 50 choices for a windshield. I have had a Clearview shield on two of my bikes and love them. Great product, thicker than a stock shield and the re-curve at the top moves the air up to go over your head so you can use a shorter shield than if it was straight.
Clearview also gives a discount to site members and has great service and return policy.
http://www.clearviewshields.com/shop/product.php?id=11

Their site shows you how to measure for the right fit windshield. You will read on other threads here that when mentioning the shield that works for a particular member they list their overall height and their pants inseam. This help in determining whether a rider is long torso or short in the torso. Sometimes the overall measurement can be affect by things like whether you slouch or ride straight up.
Another consideration on short or very curvy shields is whether the air collapses at you back and if a passenger get all the buffeting. It won't be fun for you if your passenger is in the rough wind. Of course if you ride alone than that isn't much of a concern.
Then you should think about whether you ride with a helmet and if so what type. A full face helmet may protect you from wind, rain and road debris.
As far as tint, many go clear but I like a light tint to help eliminate glare. Dark tints look cook but for some it makes it hard to see the road at night or it won't pass state inspection if too tall so you may be limited to a short shield if you want dark tint.

I am very pleased with the Long Ride Shields and right now they have 40% to 50% off depending on their promotion at the time.  When I put the Corbin Dual Tour seat, I went with a 9" shield.  When I put on the solo seat, I went with a 7" shield.  Both shields were Medium Tint and Ultra Curve.

Bowman, if you like the KW style I have a brand new 9in light Tint Long Ride Stealth Shield that imho is better quality then the Klock Werks and the design eliminates most of the buffeting I got with the KW, I can ship to your door lower 48 for $60.00
I bought both styles and like the look of the deluxe better.

I have a Longride... it's a dark tint 8" Ultra Recurve and it's great! FYI, I'm 5' 10" with a 33' inseam. I think you have to sign up for their e-mail news to get the 40 or 50% discount.

This talk of windshields reminds me that I should order a new one....last year, on the '08 Ultra, on the way home from Victoria at night, I hit a fairly big bird with the far left of the windshield. Scared the shyte outa me, but, checked it out in Duncan at the Chevron and all looked OK. Upon further inspection, I found the 'tab' on the left to be snapped off. Never did find the piece...and now that windshield is on the SESG.

I have a Clearview with the recurve.  Went with the 6".  I got the gray tint (vs. the solid black) because I wanted to be able to see thru it.  Lots of choices out there - good luck.

Have rode them all. Liked the Long Ride Recurve, but currently have a 11" Freedom and will stay with them from now on. Thicker material impresses me. Light tint works best for me, if you go dark and need to duck out of rain at night :nixweiss:

I think that would scare the shyte out of any one. Damn glad your ok. Thanks for all the advice. Looks like I'm going to get two. One light and one dark. And one 6 and on 9 and go from there. Now just to figure out brand and style.

I just installed a 7" Freedom shield in dark tint yesterday but have only taken it out for a short ride. I'm 5'-8" and 160 lbs. I would describe myself as proportional. You know no long torse, arms etc..

This shield is only 1/2" taller than the stock one but because of the flip up the obstructed view ends up being a little higher than you would expect for only 1/2" taller. I like to look over the shield and this shield performs better than the stock one. Although I would bet that an 8" or 9" would be perfect for my dimensions. BUT...I like looking OVER the shield.

At 70 mph, if I hold my hand out in front of me about 4"-5" above the new shield ALL of the sunglasses wind buffeting stops!

I rode my brothers street glide with a 6" KlockWerks and I would say the Freedom shield performs better. It was about like my original stock shield.
