2nd regulator goes out
« on: July 28, 2012, 04:18:48 PM »

Out riding today headed back to the house 18 miles out and the check engine and battery light comes on.  Well I know what this means.  Checked the voltage gauge and sure enough it was not charging.  Rode hard back to toward the house and one mile out all gauges shut down.  Coming up my driveway the bike died on me.  Guess I was lucky enough to get a replacement regulator that was bad also.  It was not one of the recall regulators that went out.  Called dealer and they said no problem just had to let MC know that one had already been replaced on my bike.  I told them I wanted the one on the wife's SESG replaced too that I had ran the VIN and it fell in the bad batch of regulators too.  Got to say my dealer takes care of me.  Thanks Renegade HD.    I feel like MC should have notified owners of the bikes in the batch of bad regulators there is a potential problem  I just wonder how many vacations or rode trips this problem has ruined. ???

I think the build dates are October 2011 thru February2012.  You can go Harley's web site and run your vin to see if it's in the campaign.

Read below: the letter I recieved today.

Dear Harley Davidson Motorcycle Owner:

Our Records indicate that you are the owner of a 2012 Touring, Softtail, Dyna or XL family motorcycle. Harley Davidson has recently implemented process improvements at the supplier lever to the voltage regulator assembly to address durability issues.

In the interest of customer satisfaction, Harley Davidson is offering a no cost upgrade service (product Program 0912) to the owners of affected 2012 motorcycles built approximately October 2011 through March 2012 dependent on the model. Upgrades for motorcycles in Product Program 0912 will include a confirmation of involvement and regulator replacement if required.

While not a safety issue, we urge you to contact your authorized Harley Davidson dealer to schedule an appointment to have product improvement service performed. The service will be performed at no cost to you if performed within two years from the program announcement date. The service will require less than one half hour to perform, however, due to scheduling, your dealer may request to have your motorcycle for a longer period of time.

This no cost offer expires two years from the date of the program announcemnt, ending June 11, 2014.

To verify that the service has been completed, your dealer will ask you to sign an acknowledgement when you pick up your motorcycle.

We thank you for your cooperation. We regret any inconvenience this may cause, but we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our product.

Where on the website do you run your VIN?  I can't find it...  :nixweiss:

Mine went out also at 4500 miles.  Il did better than some.  I didnt even see that these were on a change out campaign.  I was near my house when the lights came on. At leased my dealer was nice enough to have my bike picked up on Monday when I called on Saturday.  I live about 45 miles away.   No way I was riding it there with a bad charging system.  Years ago I might have been nuts enought to ry and make it.   No mas!  :).  I'm all good now.   (I hope).  :nixweiss:

I would assume that it would match what is on your bike.  Black one on my bike would not be acceptable.. Just saying.
