Inner primary bearing failure
« on: July 29, 2012, 03:05:26 AM »

Last week I heard a new sound in the Primary that I've never heard before.....took the scoot in for a service and come to find out my inner primary bearing is bad. I have an appointment on the 14th of Aug for replacement along with any seals (just because).
2 questions
1. Any reason I shouldn't ride my scoot in the meantime?
2. Is there anything else I should get done while I'm in there? 37k miles

Thanks

Disconnect the odometer

ride the piss out of it

get a new tranny and everything in the primary if the bearing goes south

don't disconnect the odometer and the dealer has your mileage when they discovered the bad bearing

ride the piss out of it

bearing goes south

you pay for the new tranny and everything in the primary

Any reason not to ride it?  Hard to say without inspecting it.  If it's ready to fail, then it may tear up a lot of other stuff when it goes and leaves you stranded somewhere.  What I wonder is why they didn't just fix it while they had the bike?  It's not exactly a rocket science repair or terribly time consuming for a qualified mechanic.  Or did they just give you a guess instead of inspecting it?

Something I did learn to pass on....

If you have a different sound than normal in your primary and you pull the clutch in and the sound goes away......Bearing >:(.

I mentioned it to my mechanic prior to service and asked him to check it out......he says inner primary bearing. I was only scheduled for a service and our shop is pretty swamped right now, I didn't have an issue with bringing it back in a couple weeks and he didn't seem to have a problem with me riding until then. I just figured I would ask you guys. I know the noise just started but that doesn't mean chit as far as a failure.....as far as I'm concerned it can go anytime knowing these scooters  :nixweiss:

Hi there, have them put in an M6 BT07 automatic primary chain tensioner.  http://www.haydensm6.com/m6_bt07.htm this is sure to eliminate the over tightening of your primary chain, which your stock unit is know to do. Let us know if you have any questions.

FYI- I did not ride the scoot, brought it back for my scheduled appointment and had the bearing changed. I managed a 4 hundred mile run on Friday and she sounds much better (strong once again).

The mechanic showed me the bearing and he said I caught it early.......geez I would hate to see one that was caught late. Looked to me like it sustained quite a bit of heat over the 37,000 miles (purple in color in spots) and quite a bit of pitting. I am glad I caught it and didn't have to wait for them to tell me something may be amiss.

Just goes to show.......if you know your scoot you'll know if something ain't right!!!!!!!!

The sad part is that Harley knew this was going to be a problem when they first launched the new style primary and Cruise Drive trans back in '06.  They initially set up a program on the '06 Dyna's to have those bearings changed out at 15k miles.  Next thing you know they stopped talking about it and cancelled the program.  But the failures keep coming.

Thanks for the info Dick.
I just replaced my compensator due to primary noise.

That didn't fix it, so I put on the Hayden primary chain tensioner, and that helped substantially with the noise.

But now after reading your info, I am certain I have the same thing failing.
I have had the primary off twice for the above changes and should have been suspicious of how much metal was in my primary in such short oil change intervals.

The Hayden primary chain tensioner really did quiet it down but it is still there and when I pull the clutch in it stops or at least lessens the noise.

I would have changed to Hayden if I had gotten the information sooner.
