H-D Service Guys Make Me Laugh
« on: July 30, 2012, 08:07:38 AM »

On Saturday I stopped by my local dealer for a few things and to schedule a service appointment. Got a few warranty items for them to fix and figured I would have them do the 10k service at the same time. Well, the guy asks me if my bike is over or under 10k miles. I told him just slightly over (actually 10,200 after my weekend ride with the BSR). I get the big sigh and disgusted look like I just committed one of the 7 deadly sins! :o  Now, what the heck does it matter? I could understand if I was a few THOUSAND miles over but holy crap! Just thought the whole conversation was...well...ridiculous.

Just had to vent...it's Monday. ;) Have a good week everyone and ride safe.

It would be nice if the typical Harley shop was that anal about actually doing the work properly and promptly.  See if he's that concerned about making certain they give the bike back with no greasy fingerprints all over the place, no oil hiding under the oil filter to drip out on your garage floor, no new scratches or scuffs on the paint, everything on the checklist actually done, etc.

btw, he'll probably note your failure to strictly follow the maintenance schedule in the secret Harley files, so don't be surprised if they void your warranty if something fails in the engine.

EXACTLY! Normally I do my own service stuff. Figure the added 'carrot' of letting them perform the 10k service will help get the radio with non-functioning CD player replaced AND checking the front fork bearings/fallaway. Yes, we shall see if they are as diligent getting those 2 issues corrected as they are scrutinizing mileage numbers.

I know what your talking about. Where I live we have 4 Harley dealers and out of 4 only 1 treats you like they want your business. That's why they are number 1 in this area. What is it about Harley shops where they are rude and think they are better than you? Never could understand this.

I never have any scheduled maintenance performed by dealer. Only take bikes in for warranty or repair that I cannot perform. Helps keep my blood pressure down!

X3 - I would love the report back from you after you go through the whole list of items that is supposed to be checked at 10k, hell I'd bet they don't check the fallaway even after you specifically ask them to.

OK you guys convinced me...gonna do the 10k service myself. Having the dealer perform 'warranty only' issues: the radio and fallaway. Hopefully the shorter list will ENSURE the fallaway gets checked. We shall see.......... :-\

If your stealer is like mine, they would rather write " that is normal" a thousand times on your service order than actually take the time and get the warranty money to do what you ask them to do.

Basically an overpriced fluid change at most Harley shops.  They are also supposed to check and adjust the belt tension, which will usually be loose due to initial break in, and supposedly check all the critical fasteners, operation of all the electrical switches and accessories, etc.   The full list should be in your manual, or you can log in on the Harley website and get the full list there after putting in your VIN and mileage. https://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Content/Pages/Owners/service-your-bike/maintenance-schedules/maintenance-schedules.html

Jerry /MD - Interesting you mention nonfunctional CD player.  I'm currently on my 3rd radio.

Long story short - starting last fall the first radio would go on and off when it felt like.  Had it replaced but not without some discussion with the Service Manager.  I have a J&P amp and speakers under the fairing.  Service Manager told me the heat from the amp and all the wiring was causing the radio to fail.  I explained to him I was aware of the issues with the circuit board in the HD radios.  He said there had really not been that many failures but went ahead and replaced the radio under warranty without issue.

2nd radio quit reading CDs about 2 months ago - replaced it last week but again not without static from the Service Manager about the amp and wiring.  When they put the refurbished replacement radio in the bike it would also not read a CD - basically same problem as the radio they took out.  The Service Manager told me I had something messed up in the wiring and it would take them a while to figure it out.  I assured him that there was nothing in the wiring to cause the radio to not read the CD - took a lot of convincing especially since neither radio would read the CD but he finally agreed.  I asked if they had another refurbished radio in the shop - fortunately they did.  Unhooked the wires from the back of my replacement radio and connected to the other radio.  Low and behold the CD player worked.  I looked at the Service Manager an said "looks like HD has a lot of issues with radios.  He just shook his head.  I said "I'll get out of your way and let you guys get back to work.  About an hour later all is good with the radio.

It is really amazing the lack of ability in most shops and the BS they try to give customers.  If it wasn't for the warranty I would have replaced the radio myself.

Jerry pretty much covered it. If you go into your local dealer's service center you will see a poster that says "More Than An Oil Change". They show a whole bunch of checks they claim to perform at each service interval. Do they do all they say? Who knows. If you are not mechanically inclined or don't have the tools then it may be in your best interests to pay the dealer. Fortunately I have learned over the years how to do all my own work. I got a feeling I may be learning how to check and adjust the steering head bearing too.  :o

Yikes! My only issue is the CD player. Everything else works. To be honest, I don't use the CD player...all of my music comes from the iPod. Just want it fixed in case I might need it.

Thanks. Im sure I can do the fluid change out that's no biggi but not sure about all the other stuff that requires specialty tools. Shoot I might as well give it a shot.
