2011 case halves
« on: August 01, 2012, 02:57:33 AM »

Dealer has had my seug since july 5th. I droped it off and I would pick it up on the 15th for them to do the 5,000 mile service and check and see why the gps dont play through the radio no more.  I also said It drips oil every now and then on the floor about the size of of a quarter.  well after many calls the the serverice writer and one yester day to the service manager.  I was able to go get my bike today.  the 5,000 mile service is done.  not the oil leak it needs case halves.  he let me have it back with out paying for the service $375.00 they didnt look at the gps either.  I am going to take it back one nov 1st to leave for the winter so they can do the repairs.  was thinking of calling harley myself and ask for a new engine.  or just let them do the repairs.  the service manager said when i asked if i paid for the extra labor and the parts he would do the timkin bearing install I think he said it would be around 600.00 is that sound good?  now this is for the crank right.  any body think what else I might want to have done there engine buider is awsome.

Do NOT have the HD shop do your Timkin upgrade conversion
I used to believe it was pretty simple to do with the tools supplied in the SE catalog but to my readings it would not be wise to do this way...
there is some inline reaming done to ensure that the crank will fit on not be off a few thousands and wear the bearings out prematurely...
Not just anybody can do the conversion correctly it takes a specialist like Darkhorse or R&R to do it right just to name a couple...

One more thing to consider is you can save some $$$ if you choose to put 2 lefty bearings in there instead...Unless you are building a fire breathing monster you don't need the Timkin conversion...My understanding written by some of the foremost gurus on the forums have suggested its not neccassary to do the Timkins unless you plan on Hot Roding it all the time...

I'm totally amazed that you aren't livid and ranting your azz off.  The dealership keeps your bike for nearly a month to do an overpriced 5000 mile oil change, doesn't do anything about the GPS problem, and you have to call them umpteen times before you get the bike back only to find that they want to tear the engine completely down and replace the cases.  And somehow you aren't ticked off at this dealership and plan to let them tear your engine apart, plus charge you $600 for a Timken conversion you most likely don't need.  You have to be the most laid back CVO owner I've ever heard of; definitely not typical.

Since they didn't actually do any repairs and just changed fluids, what exactly was the excuse for keeping your bike 25 days?  And what is the plan for the GPS problem?  Have they contacted Harley about getting new VIN stamped cases, or better yet a new VIN stamped complete engine replacement?  Or is that one more thing they've put off until sometime in the future?

Im with Jerry...what confidence do you have to pay $600 to a dealer to upgrade crank bearings... the same dealer that had your bike 25days and couldn't fix a GPS???
I dunno!!! I think I would get a second opinion!!!

well they are very very busy there and i have been out of town so i really wasnt too upset.  Just want it fixed right their head mechanic is very good his name is john miller.  He is very very busy.  They claim to have the fastest naturally aspirated bike in the world.  Not sure if that was at one time or still true.  But by the way people are talking I dont think i need the bearing job done.  I plan on parking it in their heated garage for the winter anyhow.  This is the only problem I have ever had.  Any time their.  I will ask about the cases and the vin. number.  Never even crossed my mind.  good thing i posted this.  the only mods I plan on doing is the fullsac stage one then some day after the young lady gets her trike may do the stage two.  depends on how stage one goes.  may just leave it alone.  The service writer I had is very young and just did not call us and let us know what was going on.  I spoke with the service manager about it.  Just a learning curve for him I hope he was new.  Every body was new once.  Figure if I am the nice guy may be they will take a little better care of the bike and I make sure the know that I am the nice guy and aint throwing a fit.  besides the vin stamping on the case anything else anyone could think of cause i am sure the primary has to come off also.  is there something about a spacer or something in there that goes bad also i am sure john will look at every thing he is very good.  Its his reputation.  thats one reason I go 70 miles away.  I have a dealer less than 8 miles from the house and i would not let them work on a lawn mower.  thanks every one.                                                  todd                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             p.s. just a though even though I am not changing cams should I check into going with diffrent headgaskets?  I think they are a little thinner to bump up the compression a little.  that way when I get it back in the spring I will be able to do the stage one then.  with the tts.

spoke with the service manager today and the vin number will come stamped on the case when it comes in.  so thats one thing off my mind.  but he wants to do the job in september and not in november.  he said he can not wait more than 3 months or harley will charge the dealer for the parts.  which I understand that.  he said he is going to get with me on friday where we will schedule a week that is good for both of us that he can have it from monday and i can pick it up on sat.  and all my issues will be looked at.  I agreed cause there is a week i will be gone in september.  Its a win win for him and I Just hope he dont push me into october when the leaves are changing cause he aint getting it.  lol.  I will ask him about crank balance on friday then.  I also want to ask about the thinner head gaskets to bump up the compression a little bit.    todd

I understand you being out of town but not doing anything but an oil change in 25 days. WOW I would of contacted Harley and would never take my bike to that shop again. And sounds like if they are that busy how much of that is repeat problems ? That are not getting fixed. I would try and speak to some of the other customers and find out if they are happy with there work. Best of luck to you hope all goes well and you actually get it fixed right the first go around.

You are aware that when and If you have the crank trued, balanced, and welded the bike will be down for several months?
If you have the Crank balanced then send the heads off to Dewey (Don Dorfman) and have him work his magic on them as well...
Do what he suggests on the heads and cams combination he has some cosmic magical powers to be able to extract every point in a build...
make sure if you decline the timkin conversion which probably for you may be a wise choice go with 2 lefty bearings...
While they are in there you want to be ensured that the squish is set correctly and actually put your eyes on this...
make sure when the mechanic goes into the motor he doesn't disturb the rings and remove the pistons from the barrels or you will loss the seat that has already accomplished...

I even thought about buying another set of heads to have done up and send them out so when they do the job they are ready to be put on.  a lot of things going through my head right now.  when they weld the crank what are they welding any how?  any pictures I can go and look at somewhere.

Todd, John is very good at working on motors.  I have had many a friends have work done at Thiels wheels.  All
were very happy with the work they do.  They are also very well in tune with the TTS tuner from what I have heard.
I also would not let any body from any of Bobs dealerships work on my Bike period.  Good dealer just sounds like
some miscommunication.  They are under new ownership I thinks about 3 years ago.  But still have John working
when he is not racing.  Good Luck with your Bike.

thanks buckey nut,   ya they have a young service writer and I am a pretty laid back guy and i do have another bike to ride its a sport bike so its not like i cant ride any.  But I am Just about ready to sell it.  Its going to get me a ticket.  Some years back I got like 4 in less thank 4 mo.  I just parked it for riding on the street and only towed it to the track.  I had bought all the shop manuals and was reading through them today it sure is a lot to do.  I do some side work out of the garage on cars and sport bikes but not on harleys unless its paint work.  but only thing I do is disassembley and my friend does the painting.  I need to learn how to down load some pics and videos.  only thing I have that takes pics is my phone and its not that great.  my girlfriend has a really nice one.  been wanting a gopro.  but I keep buying parts for the bike. lol  thanks every one for all the response       todd
