Eastern European Trip - with photos
« on: August 01, 2012, 01:11:59 PM »

So, a ride report on our vacation - photos to follow....

Set off on Saturday 23rd June, mid morning, from home in Scotland for the ferry from Newcastle (England), and had a cool, if dry, and uneventful, trip.  Ferry was packed with bikes - more than I've ever seen on any ferry before, but we were the only Harleys!

Sun 24th
Off the ferry at Ijmuiden, into, as always, pouring rain. (Does it ever NOT rain in Holland??) It chucked it down in stair rods every inch of the way to
Dusseldorf, where we arrived mid afternoon to catch the Autozug train to Villach in Austria.  The rain stopped as we arrived, but it had been so wet
that some of the electronics on my bike had got soaked, and I was no longer getting voice prompts in my helmet from the Garmin.

Mon 25th
The train ride was fabulous!  I recommend it to anyone.  Great scenery heading down the Rhine in the evening, while seated in the bar/restaurant, enjoying the trip. Compartment was comfortable and civilised, with the car attendant delivery breakfast, with more great scenery in the morning, among the Alps. Bit of a while to get the bikes off the train, but the weather was warm and nice, so no big deal.  Headed off into Slovenia, following our route through lovely mountain roads, plenty of downhill hairpins.  Great!  Thence into Italy and Motorway to Venice to catch our ferry to Igoumenitsa in Greece. When we arrived, we (along with many others!) discover that the operator (Minoan Lines) cancelled all sailings from Venice at the end of May.  They just didn't bother to tell us.  "All they could offer" was their ferry from Ancona to Igoumenitsa the next day.  We had no choice but to take that of course, losing the [fully paid] hotel booking for the next night, and wondering if we could catch up on our itinerary....  So, we head, in 110F heat, south towards Ancona. Stopped for the night in San Marino, where we'd not been before, and found a hotel. This was the silver lining, as it's a gorgeous place, very well worth a visit.

Tues 26th
Ferry from Ancona to Igoumenitsa in Greece.

Wed 27th
Arrived in Igoumenitsa at about 2PM on the day we should have left at 9AM, to visit the monasteries at Meteora. However, that night's hotel was booked at Kavala, so there was little alternative but to cut the trip to Meteora, get on the Motorway, and get to Kavala. Greek motorways are very nice - good surfaces, cheap tolls, and almost deserted, all the way to Kavala. It too is a nice place, and now that we were enjoying wall-to-wall sunshine all day, we spent a very pleasant evening there.

Thu 28th
Kavala to Bourgas (now made infamous by the terrorist bomb the other week) in Bulgaria, bypassing Turkey. Last 50 miles to the Bulgarian border were pretty awful; lots of roadworks, but not a lot being done, and some very bad surfaces. Crossing into Bulgaria was quick and easy, though the going was slow, with lots of [slow] traffic on mountain roads, and car drivers who seemed to revel in being both homicidal and suicidal maniacs. Bulgarian roads are not great, though I've see worse (in Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, and eastern Poland last year, for example.)  Arrived in Bourgas, among very heavy traffic, and found our hotel.  It was just plain brilliant!  5 star, very luxurious, and cheap.  Would go back there any time!

part 2 to follow....

Eastern European Trip Part 2
« Reply #1 on: August 01, 2012, 01:12:57 PM »

Fri 29th
Lazy day heading up the Black Sea coast to Constanta in Romania.  We expected Romania to be very different from what we found; better roads than Bulgaria, better driving, and obviously more prosperity. Arrived at our hotel in Mamaia to find the area is plainly a Romanian millionnaire's playground. Lots of money here, expensive cars, and though our [nominally 5 star] hotel was cheap, eating out, etc was not.  Stayed here two nights, and enjoyed it, though most unusually, the hotel objected when we wanted to give our bikes a quick wash in the car park...

Sunday 1st
Short ride to Bucharest on the Motorway.  Enjoyed Bucharest, took the HoHo bus tour in the afternoon, then a two hour walking tour in the early evening, followed by an open-air dinner in a really nice ancient courtyard restaurant.  Our hotel, a little boutique hotel to the north of the City centre, was an absolute gem, with a great welcome from very friendly owner and staff.  And at a great price.  Bucharest was not what we imagined either - I'd thought that there was little of the old city left, and that it had been flattened by Ceaucescu to build endless blocks of soviet-style flats.  The flats exist OK, no doubt about that, and he did indeed flatten lots of the old city for his grandiose plans, but there is still a lot of the old town, once known as the
Paris of the East, to see.  Some utterly fabulous Art Deco architecture to see,  though there are many such buildings unoccupied and falling to bits due to lack of attention. Apparently this is because many were confiscated by the communist régime, and there are lots of disputes about ownership. Enjoyed the city though, and would recommend it.

Monday 2nd
North out of Bucharest to the "English Cemetery" - a CWGC cemetery, where my dad's cousin is buried (a WW2 bomber pilot, shot down in the area). Nice to visit his grave, being the first family member to ever do so, as far as I am aware.  Then eastward on minor roads, through little villages.  Amazingly, road surfaces were still good.  Lots of obviously expensive new houses being built in many of the villages, though again, many pretty old style houses in them too.  This was, I felt, the "real" Romania, with the omnipresent donkey carts being numerous, and three times saw a bunch of people riding around on what seemed to be a motorised saw!  Engine in the middle with a ginormous flywheel, and the belt on it driving the wheels. No bodywork, and what appeared to be a saw at the front. Onward via Dracula's supposed castle to the Transarasan, which opened the day before.  Supposedly the best way is to do it north to south, but I'd disagree - south to north, as we did it, was great. Road surface is not good at all for the whole ascent really, but is greatly improved for the entire descent. And what a descent it is!  There's no road I know of that even comes close to the enjoyment to be had, and I got a clear run, with an enthusiastic VW Golf as the pacemaker, so I knew where any bad bits were. Think things like the Dragon are good, and challenging?  Not even in the same class!  I'd love to go back and do it again... Onward then to our hotel for the night, the Hilton in Sibiu. Only disappointing thing of the day was that the Bucharest Harley dealer was closed till noon, too late for us, & I wanted a T-shirt!

Tuesday 3rd
Sibiu to Budapest.  A long day. Busy, busy main roads, and 110F all the way. Not fun, like riding in a hair dryer.

Wednesday 4th
Another scorching day Took the HoHo bus tour, and enjoyed it.  Hadn't been to Budapest (or indeed anywhere in Hungary) before but it's a beautiful city, and we'll go back someday for certain.  Dropped in to the Harley dealer there, and found them to be a surly bunch, not a smile or even a "hello", and T-shirts at over $65. I think not!!  Our route then was supposed to take us north at Gyor, and into Slovakia, but Digital Doris on the Garmin thought she knew better for some reason.... By the time I realised something wasn't right, we were getting close to Vienna, but nonetheless I gave Doris one last chance to get us on the remnants of the route, and headed north towards Bratislava, into Slovakia.  After a while, she still continued to insist on a U turn, so back we went.  Still - Slovakia?  Of course!  Been there, done that (for 20 minutes!)  :D  Had an adventurous time finding the hotel in Vienna's entrance, which had not been clear from Google Maps/Streetview, but got there.  Stopped at the entrance, where I was quickly accosted by the commissionnaire, apparently a Philipino gentleman, who asked me to move as "taxis stop here for guests" (!)  Maintaining my cool with some degree of effort, I informed him that "guests were stopping here to unload their bike!"  He got the message, and instantly turned helpful. Into the city centre for a short evening walking tour and a bite to eat, which was interesting. Looks like a nice place, and added to the list to return to.

Thursday 5th
Escaping from Vienna was not fun.  Traffic was bumper to bumper, and the Motorway had lots of roadworks, and what looked like a normal off-the-motorway-and-back-on in the right hand lane turned out not to be!  My friend, on the other had was in the left hand lane, so we got separated for an hour, while I tried vainly to about-turn.  My new route and his eventually converged, and we headed off into the Alps, via St Michael in der Obersteiermark, to Liezen, Bad Ischl, Salzburg, and back into Germany, to our hotel at Rimsting (strangely, not a curry shop in sight!) On the Chiemsee.  Again, a lovely area, and a lovely hotel at a decent price. Not a bad day's ride, with lots of pretty scenery, but a bit cloudy - hard to get used to after all the sunshine of previous days!

Part 3 to follow.....

Eastern European Trip Part 3
« Reply #2 on: August 01, 2012, 01:13:35 PM »

Friday 6th
Bizarrely, we had to split the days rides into two routes, as Doris had point blank refused to entertain our planned route, which crossed into Austria again, then back into Germany just outside of Garmisch-Partenkirken.  She would not cross that second border, for reasons best known to herself! So, cross country from Chiemsee to Garmisch-Partenkirken, where we arrived to find more BMW bikes than we'd ever seen - turned out to be the BMW Motorraden annual rally. From there, route 2 for the day took us through some fabulous Alpine riding country, off the main roads, but the weather let the scenery down. First rain and mist since our arrival day. Why does it ALWAYS seem to rain in Germany when I'm there!?!?) Past Lindau to Friedrichshafen, yet again passing by with not enough time to visit the Zeppelin museum, unfortunately.  I always seem to promise myself that I'll do it next time. Worst road diversion I've ever seen there, with the main road (31/E54) closed, and the diversion almost totally unsignposted taking all the traffic for ten miles or so on single track road through little villages and camp sites!  No room for traffic to pass, no idea how far till we could rejoin the main road.... Nightmare. Onward eventually along the north shore of Lake Constance, then cross country through the Black Forest to another nice hotel, at Lahr. Weather had slightly improved so the lovely rural roads through the forest were more enjoyable. Prearranged meeting here with some old German friends from the Baden HOG chapter, and a pleasant evening was had.

Saturday 7th
Another lovely day, crossing from Germany into France on a little free ferry across the Rhine, then a meander through little villages of Alsace and
Lorraine on little D roads, over the Vosges by a col, rather than the tunnel. Pleasant temperatures all the way, but the last 10k it looked like we were
going to get soaked - made it into the hotel in the centre of St Quentin, just as the downpour started!  :)

Sunday 8th & Monday 9th
Two nights in the hotel in St Quentin, for our WW1 tourism.  Went to the big WW1 museum in Péronne (not hugely impressed) went to see Lutyen's memorial to the missing of the Somme at Thiepval, the Golden Virgin on the basilica in Albert, Serre Road No 2 cemetery, "Ocean Villas" tea room for lunch (very disappointed - not in the lunch, but in how run down the trenches and so on are, after they'd been so well restored), and to visit Robert Digby's grave further west from the Somme (of the book called both "The Englishman's Daughter and "A Foreign Field", depending on where you buy it, by Ben McIntyre. A most enjoyable read, if you haven't!) which my Mrs had long wanted to see. The next day, to the Lochnagar mine crater, and the Glory Hole, then up towards Ypres, and a visit to Tyne Cot cemetery.  On seeing the size of the cemetery, it takes your breath away.  Then to the centre of Ypres, and a visit to the museum in the rebuilt cloth hall, which is great, but we didn't have enough time to see it properly before closing time. Definitely worth a revisit. Finally, the Menin Gate for the Last Post Ceremony, then off to Calais to spend the night in a low cost motel.

Tuesday 10th
Up early, on to the train to go through the Channel Tunnel, and head northwards for the long boring ride home - last four hours was wet, with rain like shotgun pellets, sometimes so heavy that all traffic slowed to a crawl!

Arrived safely home, wet, tired, and exhausted. 4288 miles in total.

Photos next.....
