looking to install narrow drive belt kit.
« on: August 01, 2012, 08:16:55 PM »

I need to replace my 1 1/2 drive belt with  a 1 1/8 or 1in set up. the purpose is so i can put a 150 tire on the back. i have a 4 1/4 in 18in wheel on the back and have tried to put a 150 on it and it wont fit,no matter what adjustment is tried it rubs the belt. they don't make a 140 tire any more for the rear so i have to run a 130 which is way too small. so anyway my question is anybody know a good kit out there that comes with belt and both pulleys? or what else can you recommend? Thanks.

Try the Pingle wheel spacer. With it I was able to run a 150.

:2vrolijk_21: Yes, we have done many with the Pingle as well as other pulley spacers. You need to check clearance between the pulley face and the inside of the swingarm.

so i guess i don't understand how that works, if you space the wheel away from the belt, wont that put the wheel too far to the right causing tracking problems, not to mention probable rubbing on the right side of the fender or swingarm?  :confused5:

Those are all good questions that I can't answer. All I know is that it worked for me without any tracking or rubbing or clearance issues. I'm sure a tech person will be better able to give you all the details of why.

The spacer goes between the pulley and the wheel hub. The width of the spacer you use is limited by the space availible between the pulley and the swingarm. The wheel spacing in the swingarm is not changed.

OK so i was just on pingel's site and read up on the spacer, it says it will allow for up to a 142mm tire. if I'm not mistaking a 150/70/18 Metzler ME880 tire is 149mm so if my math teacher taught me right, i still don't have enough clearance, has anybody used this spacer with this size tire, and it worked without any other mods?

Sometimes yes and sometimes no with the Pingel. The one thing that is consistant about Harleys is that they are inconsistant. Especially when you add aftermarket parts into the equation. Like I stated inm my posts above the 150/70-18 tire will fit in an 03 without changing the belt. You need to check the pulley to swingarm clearance then go from there to determine the thickness of spacer that your bike can use.

is there a brand of spacer that works best? all I know is i bought a 150 tire last summer to put on it, i had a reputable shop put it on, he said they spent most of the day trying to adjust it so it would not rub the belt, and couldn't get it to not rub, so he had to mount my old tire back on. He said the only way to put it on was with a narrow belt. He did not mention anything about using a spacer. i think the problem is my wheel being so wide, it pushes the sidewall out farther, causing a mounting issue. can you say rock and hard place!
