Wont be riding tonight-LOST THE KEYS- Help
« on: August 15, 2006, 11:28:25 PM »

I am pretty sure that I am not the only idiot out there, so come  on guys, share some hard earned knowledge.    [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Sad story goes like this= I installed a Dakota Digital hidden antenna and had to remove the ignition.  Somehow when it was reinstalled, the key position was in "lock" and after I rode it, when I went to wash the bike I put it in "accessory" ( to listen to the tunes)   and the darn thing locked in acc position, with no key in it..  SO   then I started to look for the key, and I looked and looked and looked. And looked.   At least the bikes in my driveway.....with the battery disconnected. :'( :'( :'(

What is the most practical solution-call a locksmith, or just drill out the keyway and replace it someday or
just wait forever for the stealer to get me a new key.  [smiley=confused5.gif]

I actually ordered a spare set lsat year and I cant find them either.  At least until I drill the lock out and then they will magically appear, as do all lost objects.

Any way to pick the darn thing until I get a new key? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

If it was my scooter I would take my title (proof of ownership) to a local HD dealer and have them cut you a new key using your vin#, I have never had it done for a HD scooter but I would think they could do this.

Guess it wouldn't hurt to call your local dealer First and ask if he can cut a new key from your vin#

Good Luck and if it works get a 2nd key and put in somewhere you will remember .....LOL

Icybay, you may have already thought about this, but don't forget that the gold key will fit the ignition as well, and will work in a pinch.

AAA Plus, tows bikes and RV's and up to 100 miles.  That would get you down to the nearest HD shop and they could handle it.  Otherwise go the title/registration route or better yet get drunk tonight and wake up knowing where the key is, at least you can't get a DUI on the bike tonight.

Unless something has changed recently I don't believe dealers have the ability to cut keys. You may be able to get one ordered by a VIN# on a bike that is only a couple years old. I remember when I owned my Fatboy I only had got one key when I purchased it (used), and tried to order another key from the MoCo and was told that I couldn't even get one that way. Only way to get two keys was for me to replace the ignition switch. I have had keys made at some locksmiths that make barrel keys, and have seen vendors at events making spare keys. Good luck, hope you get in the wind soon.

There is a pick for these round locks I seen one before.Try calling a locksmith or two. If you get real lucky they might be able to pick it.

yup, I can confirm that you have to order a key from HD and it takes about 2 weeks.

I would be tearing the house apart to find the spare key.

Oh!   I never do anything that silly!!  :)

On a related note, I dropped my keys on the way to Cripple Creek.  They hit the ground, bounced once, and went down a storm drain with the ignition locked and the alarm on!  Luckily, the keys hit a dry part of the drain and we were able to retrieve them.

Lesson learned:

Take the spare key and alarm fob and tie-wrap it in the area under the seat when you go on a road trip!  This way, you'll always have keys even if they're out of sight.  Someone will have a screwdriver for you to remove the seat...

Another option is to hint to your significant other that your CVO key would look good on necklace instead of sitting in the jewelry box for the rest of its life, who knows you might get surprised like I did last Christmas, now I wear it all the time.

I wont share the last years Sturgis story (too long), but I will share the last months version of: Phone call to wife "Honey, are my keys on the dresser" (yes), would you bring them to me at the office? She says how did you get the bike started (we all know), but I had no way to lock the bike and sure was not going to let it sit in the parking lot all day with nothing locked!  :P

I have been taking a spare set of keys on any long trip (cage or bike) since the loosing my set while sailing incident in San Diego. Ugh!
