I'm not much of a tech, and patience is not my virtue. With that being said, my Ironside heated grips are shot and I don't have an extended warranty. The dealer wants three hours labor to install new ones. My question is this: can you just splice new ones to the existing wires without going to the trouble of removing the outer fairing, pulling the old wires out and installing the new grip wires?
It's pretty much impossible. To remove the grip on the left with the controller, you have to have slack in the wiring going through the bars. Problem is, they are tightly zip tied to the harness coming from the right at the entrace hole in the crotch of the bars. In order to access enough to even snip that zip tie, you have to remove the radio and a essentially do most of the job anyway. Even if you could snip that zip tie, I don't think you'll get enough slack to neatly slice a new grip in anyway. Might as well just unplug the bars and remove them, doing it right.
I would however highly recommend going to the Heat Demons. I burned out 3 sets before I finally clued in that the Harley chit, is well, chit. The Heat Demons don't get quite as hot, and you have to be careful when installing, but based on others experiences, they will last a very long time. My .02 fwiw.
