Another 110 Heat question.
« on: August 05, 2012, 05:33:35 PM »

Ok so I recently moved up to FLHXSE3 and I love the bike and the looks.  I plan on keeping it for a long time.  However, my previous Harley was a 2004 Heritage, so needless to say I was a bit concerned by all the heat that the engine was generating.  When I had my Heritage I lived in Southern Utah desert so I was use to heat and threw an oil cooler on the 88 in that bike.  Now I am in Louisiana, and it seems so much hotter here at 97 degrees than it ever did out west at 115 degrees.  So far I have changed to the Fullsac x-pipe, with Reinhart 4-inch mufflers, SE race tuner, and Renegade Harley did the dyno.  My understanding is that Renegade is fairly well respected by most and I have been happy with most of the accessories that they have put one the bike for me (even though I was wish they could have done a better job with the gps and radio).  So I finally figured out after a bunch of reading that these bigger engines run hot regardless.  But it still makes me nervous when I see temps after a 2 hour ride of 290 degrees measured by the digital dipstick.  As I said, I plan on keeping this bike for a long while and would rather spend my money on a second bike than replacing this one every couple years, so keeping the engine temp down I think is important for longevity.  So now comes my questions:
1) I have ordered the new Jagg fan assist oil cooler hoping that that will help.  Do I want to throw the automatic bypass valve on while they change the cooler out?  I figure I can ride through the winter down here in the south, so some cooler temp riding will be in my future. Are people happy with the Jagg fan-assited coolers?

2) I have also ordered the Baker 1.5 oil pan, thinking that the extra capacity could be of some benefit as well.  Anyone using one of these? Thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

I live in south florida and heat is an issue here all thine. First and most important,,, take the lower fairings off.  They do nothing but hold heat in.   Then get a good exhaust system and a good tune.  I went with the fulsac with 2" cores and they are just right for me.  You get rid of the hot cat and it breathes better.  Then get a tts and have someone professionally tune it.  That should be a good start.  I was out all day today in 90 plus and was fine.   The lowers wiill make a huge difference.

Good exhaust and tune? He has done that- the exhaust anyways, who knows if the tune is optimal...not sure how good a job they did.

I agree with removing the lowers. I have soft lowers I put on in the spring, and take off all summer. Once it even warms up into the 70's, I need to take the lowers off- they noticably hold in the heat.

I know our bikes have the HD oil cooler, but I've heard good things about the Jagg 10 row oil cooler- might be worth checking that out too.

Leave the fairings on and do the Fullsac treatment.

He did that.

The Fullsac x-pipe only does so much for heat.  There's a pocket of still air right above the collector where it gets nasty hot.  Doesn't bother me, but does bother my BSR.  If I did more two-up riding, I'd probably have to look at removing the lowers, or going with a totally different exhaust setup.

i kinda like the look of the sg without the lowers in place...  the heat benifit is only one aspect of the matter..    I think the bike looks better and is difinitely cooler for the rider and the passenger..  And i did the fulsac. :nixweiss:

RockonBigB, Just to put your mind at rest. I have an 09SEUC with the fulsac sac stage one map,HD/K&N  high flow air cleaner, noncat header, and 1.75 fulsac baffles. I run Amsoil 60 WT synthetic  racing oil in the engine. On my way back to Simi Valley, Ca. from Canada last year I passed thu St. George Utah in the mid afternoon.(not my original plan) The air temp was at least 110 degrees, and I was traveling over new black asphalt. It got so hot that I had to stop in because my wife's right tennis shoe came apart.(stopped at Walmart and got a new pair). I was concerned about my engine, but it just purred along with no issues.(other than the normal noises I hear between about 2800-3000 RPM) We took about a 2 hour break and then headed for Las Vegas where it was 107 degrees as the sun was setting. I figure if I can make it thru that I am not going to add any more gauges and oil coolers. The more guages I have to look at the more I have to worry about. Just got back from Floral Arkansas about a month ago. It was over 100 almost every day. If any thing needs a temp guage and cooler it is me. So no more trips after the second week of May or until the 1st week of Oct. Also, I had very minimal oil comsumption on both trips.I am all for the Jagg oil coolers, but regarding fan assisted coolers, I have one on my Honda  CRF450X mounted behind the radiator. JMHO, but I don't think the fans do any good after you hit about 30 MPH, but they would be great if caught in traffic. CAHDBIKER
