Curiosity Rover on Mars
« on: August 06, 2012, 01:26:31 AM »

I'm about to have a potty accident.  The rover has probably just transitioned from spacecraft to air ship as it hit atmosphere and guided entry has begun.  This landing is so complicated.  The wait is hell.  C'mon NASA!!   :bananarock:

That was absolutely awesome!  Really doubted this landing.  Was so hard.  The little bitch landed perfect.  Every stage.

Just saw pictures of the rover on the surface of Mars from just after it landed!  Wheels down on mars with a mini-van sized vehicle.

Thank you NASA!!!

A pot full of money and an even bigger pot full of luck. Way to go NASA/JPL/MANKIND! I can't wait to see the rest of the mission unfold.

So that was way cool. Of course my "curiosity" piqued and was wondering "how long".

Turns out 14 minutes. !4 minutes on the ground before NASA knew they were safe on terra firma. Well what ever terra firma is on Mars that is.

This video answered my questions.

Did you catch the TV camera guy race out of the room a few minutes before touchdown and then rush back in?

Totally BEYOND Awesome! NASA has done the impossible this time with Curiosity!

Why don't we transfer some of those super-smart government rocket scientists to CONGRESS:nixweiss:

Not many rocket scientists meet all of the qualifications - most have never been convicted nor indited.

My niece (nine years old) in the last month has decided she's going to be an astrophysicist when she grows up.  Complete with recent purchase of books like beginning physics for kids (or stupid grownups).  She's always like the stars and learning to recognize stars and constellations.  But the run up to this rover landing has really piqued her curiosity.

Watching last night gave me flash back to when I was eight and watched the first moon landing.  It's exhilerating.  Not sure I can imagine the flight command people in the control room watching and hoping and dreaming and knowing every single bit of it was out of their hands.  Not only out of their hands but had already happened nearly a quarter hour earlier before they knew a thing.  No matter what that is good TV.

Others have tried and failed.  We have failed before too.  But so far no one but America has successfully put a lander on Mars.  We rock.  NASA rocks.  That is a few billion dollars well spent.  Don't even want to imagine the political repercussions and funding hits NASA takes if the landing fails last night.  No can't wait to see what comes next!

Having grown up in Virginia, both my father and stepfather worked for NASA. The space program was a large part of our lives. We can say what we want about wasting money in space, but we can thank the space program for our computers, modern medicine, digital cameras, and a thousand other things we use in our daily lives.
So if you think we landed on the Moon or Mars your wrong. The pictures were taken in area 51. You really don't think we could go to Mars or the moon, do you? :o
