HD Boom Hidden antenna ( my review)
« on: August 07, 2012, 09:17:29 AM »

Just picked up my bike after having some mods done. I removed the shorty and installed the new HD Boom hidded antenna. Worth noting, I live about 10 minutes from NYC. The reception is great with FM, AM and WB. Very pleased with results.

Pics to follow shorty, also installed Yaffe plate and hid the 2 point docking. I ride solo most of the time. Really happy wih the simple clean look. :pepper:

I have had this antenna on my bike for about six months and the radio reception is terrible - just like it is with most all other hidden antennas on the market.  If you are looking to get good radio reception I would avoid it like the plague.  If you like the no-antenna look and really only listen to your iPod (or SiriusXM) like I do then it is as good an option as the others.

Mine works as good if not better than the one that came on the 2011 (shorty).
Works like a charm for me.

Being the electronics master here  :2vrolijk_21: does the way of mounting or positioning inside the fairing have an effect on reception?
Wondering why bhtko is having issues.

Living very close to a major city makes a huge difference.  I can get decent reception here near Chicago with a bent coathanger.  A much better test would be to take the full size whip antenna, the shorty antenna, and the hidden antenna out in the boondocks far from a big city and compare reception.  Under those conditions, unless something magical has changed in the past few years since I last experienced a hidden antenna, I'd guess your results would be different.

Anyhow, if you're happy, and you never plan to use the radio while traveling across some wide open spaces, it's all good.  Don't throw the old antenna away though; you never know, you might wind up moving to Wyoming or Montana some day. ;)

I really do not know why I am having issues.  I live about 30 miles outside of Milwaukee - not Manhattan but not exactly the boonies.  If the fairing is pointed away from the city (where the radio stations are) even slightly the reception is terrible.  Also, if I am around a lot of trees the same thing.  It does not improve until I am VERY close to the city.  I had good reception and none of these problems with my stock shorty antenna.   :nixweiss:

Another telling item... my dealer offered to remove it and take it back at no charge because he said that several people complained about similar, poor results.

Well I may have been a little quick to post how good the HD hidden works. I'll give it a 6 out of 10 when tuninto FM gets worse with AM ( yankee games).

Love the clean look, wish there was a way to keep both?

Not installing it properly would have DRASTIC effects on reception.
The install instructions are pretty clear so not sure what the problem with bhtko is.

I've done 3 other installs for friends and all of them are very happy with it.
My opinion is it works as advertised - which is to say - as good or better than the shorty antenna that comes stock.

The antenna is installed properly.  The problem is that it works just like most, if not all, other hidden antennas... bad.  Nowhere near as good as the stock antenna.  JMO

There is, just Google "antenna Y adapter"
This is how I use the internal antenna when I have the Tour Pak on
and then just screw the short whip back on when I remove the Tour Pak.

Not saying it wasn't.
Just pointing out that not properly installing it would have an effect on how well it works.
