Switching to Redline Oil . . .
« on: August 07, 2012, 06:25:44 PM »

My 11 SERGU is approaching the 1000 mile service. In talking with the Service Manager I was told something that sort of surprised me. . . .

I mentioned that I wanted to switch oil to Redline Shock Proof in the Tranny; Redline Primary Oil and either Redline 20w-50 or 20w-60 in the motor. I was tolde tha the use of Redline Synthetic oils would make my bike run even hotter than it already does. In all the discussions about oils, I don't think I have ever heard anyone say this.

Does anyone out there have any thoughts or knowledge about this??

Thanks,

Grey Ghost

My thought is that whoever told you that is FOS and just trying to sell you Harley products.  Ask him to show you documented test results comparing the same bike under the same operating conditions with Redline products and then with Harley products.

Thanks guys . . . I almost got lulled into the dark side of insanity. You are correct . . . It makes no sense that a different gear oil will affect the motor temp. I am not sure if "she" (it is a woman SM) was talking about the motor oil when she made the comment. She did say though that Redline is a thicker oil and thicker oil makes the motor run hotter than thin oil.  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:This makes no sense to me either. Isn't 20w-50 the same accross all brands??

You can't fix stupidity.
Find a new dealer, and let the owner of the dealership how stupid the service manager  is...

Just curious . . . What sort of "bad luck" have you had with Redline. I have heard so much good about their product, especially what it does in quieting and smoothing out the gear box.

Here is a Used Oil Analysis of Lucus 20W50. The oil was run for 1500 miles. As you can see the SUS Viscosity is 60.3 which means it broke down to a 30 weight oil. If it was still a 50 weight it would have had a SUS Viscosity of 83.1,and 10.29cst is closer to 30wt than the 12.5cst of 40wt. It has a nice additive package but it's base oil just is not that good. This analysis was done by Blackstone labs.

I've attached a page from the 2009 Amsoil sponsored motorcycle oil report that ranks the 17 oils tested.  Note that Lucas High Performance 20w50 is rated in 16th position.  H-D dinosaur oil is actually rated higher.

I am always suspicious of self testing. Why is Red Line not on the list? because they were not in the top seventeen or they didn't want to show one that was actually better than theirs????? :nixweiss:
I don't have the answer just suspicious of self promoting testing results.

we were running BRADE FOOTE 3 speed trans, ran REDLINE twice, both times had bearing failure (only 2 times I ever had bearing problems in 15 years running FOOTE trans),alot of piston scuffing & just accelorated wear on everything on the engine side.right now we run on nitro,no oil related issues at all, still using LUCAS

I don't have the answer just suspicious of self promoting testing results.

If you go to the site and read the entire report they explain how they came up with the brands they tested.  Basically they chose the top selling brands at the time (I forget when the initial testing was conducted, the chart I posted is a 2009 update to the original).  My answer to those who bring this up every time the report is mentioned is, if Redline really is better than Amsoil or the other top performers, why haven't they done their own tests and published the results?  They are fully aware of this Amsoil sponsored report, and have commented on it, but have never offered to have the exact same tests run on their oil and then publish the full results.  So while I never just blindly accept things like the Amsoil report, I also have no problem blowing off complaints from folks who bitch about the results but don't offer to provide the same test results for their product.

btw, if you look at the individual test rankings on the chart I posted, you might note that Amsoil did not come in at #1 in all the tests, and in fact came in with middling scores in a couple of them.  Not exactly the sort of thing you would expect if all they were trying to do is mislead people.  Read the full report, note that they fully explain each test and what industry standards were used, and then realize that anyone who sells a different brand and believed those results were bogus could easily duplicate the tests and refute the results if they were bogus.  I have seen absolutely zero response from the other companies selling those other 16 products in that chart. :nixweiss:

Greyghost, I have been using redline shockproof in the trans on my 95 Heritage for at least 5 years now and it shifts totally smooth. In my 09SEUC I use amsoil 75-140 and it seems to help quiet down 5th gear whine even when hot,(tried redline it didn't quiet it down as much ) in the engine both bikes get Amsoil 60 Wt racing oil. Primarys get HD Formula+. No problems. Very minimal oil use in  09. Just got back from 4000 mile trip in over 100 degree weather (that won't happen again) and I used less than half quart  engine oil on entire trip. This is a repeat , but just for the record my friend got 180,000 miles out of his 2001 heritage using HD dino 20-50 He changed oil and filter at 5000 mile intervals. Also he was still on his original drive belt. Then his balancer went out and took the engine with it. Too bad. I thought for sure he was going to make it to 200K. CAHDBIKER
