Clutch problem on the road in TN
« on: August 08, 2012, 08:06:45 PM »

I'm on the road in Murfreesboro tonight.  Clutch started slipping today.  In 6th gear going about 60mph at around 2300 rpm, if I try to accel to quick the rpm's jump up to 3500rpm.  I can make it do it in all 6 gears.  Any suggestions?  Which is the best HD service dept around here.  I see Bumpus and Graceland in Memphis, and another one in Franklin.  Any experience with these?  Thanks

Bumpus in Murfreesboro would be my 1st choice.  Talk to Dave, he's the Service Manager.

Ditto. Tom Bumpus is the owner. Good guy. They will take care of you.

Not the cheapest in town, but as I said, my first choice with a problem.

How much does a clutch job cost?

No idea....the only time I've put in a new clutch, I did it myself.  If I was home, I'd invite you over to do it, once you got parts, but I won't be there until a week from tomorrow.  If you need a new clutch, I'm not sure who would have one in stock.  Most likely either Bumpus or Boswells.

You looking for a stock clutch or going something aftermarket?  Might be some places you can get a Barnett over nighted.

I'm not sure which clutch to go with.  I feel kind of vulnerable this far from home.  I really appreciate your help.  I'm staying about a mile from Bumpus in Murfreesboro, plan on being there when they open at 8am.  Is it possible the clutch can be adjusted?  It isn't totally gone yet.

If it's slipping, maybe is the best answer I can give.  If it's all gummed up, the plates can be cleaned, which may give you some more life.  Eventually, it'll need to be replaced.  However, I didn't think to ask...do you have any free play in the lever?  Is it possible it was adjusted to tight to begin with?

If you can talk to Dave, tell him Steve from the Weasels sent you in.

Will do, Steve.

I've got 31,000 miles now, and I just ran the dragon 6 times, and the devil's triangle, and other curvy's in east TN and western NC.  I rode it pretty hard.

Like he mentioned.....if there is play in the lever...and I mean quite a bit, then adjustment might help.  Otherwise, the primary cover is going to be coming off.  The only real advice I can offer is this:  Don't take it to Cool Springs HD....nice folks, but quite possibly the slowest service department in the country.

As far as adjustment goes...looking at your info your bike should have an hydraulic clutch which would mean no clutch adjustments possible..or am I missing something?

There is a Bumpus in Murfreesboro, another in Jackson, TN and the original in Memphis.

The Graceland that you are pulling up is just a t-shirt store, no parts, no service.
