NEW ELECTRONIC TOY
« on: August 09, 2012, 12:45:19 PM »

I've been toying with the idea of a tablet, but never thought about as a viable purchase.  But as time went on and I was using my iPhone more and more while watching TV to look things up or to do quick stuff, I was leaning toward the iPad 2 or the New iPad.

I ended up getting an ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700.  This is an Android based OS and it has a 16:10 screen that has 1920x1200 res; not as high as the New iPad, but in the 16:10 widescreen format it's pretty darn good.

I'm still getting used to the Android apps and how the tablet functions, which is pretty much totally different from the Apple iOS.

The ASUS I bought is a WIFI with 64g internal drive.  It comes with the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad+1 core processor and 1g DDR3/1600 Ram.  On the tablet I have a Micro SD card slot that will take up to a 64g external chip and I have a 32g chip in it for added storage.  I also bought the dock for the tablet, hence the term Transformer Pad.  This allows for the tablet to just snap into the hinge on the back of the keyboard dock.  This dock has a USB, slide pad for pointer use, charging plug, a full size HCSD slot and a 22w/h battery.  So with the 9.5 hour estimate on the tablet the dock gives another 5 hours of use.

The only thing that is still to be determined is can I Remote Desktop to my work desktop PC and network?  I use an Acer Aspire One netbook now when I travel and it does the remote hookup very well.

If anyone has any ideas about remote desktop use with Android, let me know.

Other than that it's a great tablet so far and my wife seem glad I got it as she uses it about every night looking up crap she can't remember, so she says...

One other purchase of late was my new Bose Soundlink bluetooth portable speaker.  This think is wireless in both portable Lith-poly battery for outdoor use and the bluetooth works great.  I take my iPhone and just turn on the Bose and it beeps when linked.  I open up my music app and hit play.  This thing has great sound and lots of volume to boot.  It works with any bluetooth including my new tablet.  When I watch Netflix I put the speaker behind the tablet and the sound is awesome to say the least.

So anyone with Andriod experience chime in as I need all the help I can get with the ASUS tablet.  It has ISC (Ice Cream Sandwich) now with JB (Jelly Bean) soon to come.  What weird names they have for their OS...

Congrads on your new tablet, iPad or Android, you'll enjoy either.  In regards to remote Desktop software, there are tons available. Do a "remote desktop" search with your Droid Market Tool and many will pop up. Remote Droid is my favorite.   Try the freebies first to get the hang of using the app then find one that works for your needs.   Have fun with your new toy.   :2vrolijk_21:

What was the price diff Dan?

One of the things that has prevented us from buying an iPad is the fact that there is no usb or data card option.

Your model may be viable for us.

Cvobiker, Thanks for the suggestion on the remote desktop apps, I'll try one out next week.

MURPHY, I tend to over research things to death before I make a move, which drives my wife batty sometimes.

I'm familiar with iPhones and have played with iPads some so I know how they operate and what the apps are like. But I just didn't like the lack of expansion for memory among other things.

The ASUS Infinity 64G sells for $599 US and the keyboard dock was $150. I didn't know it at the time but the ASUS TF201 keyboard dock is only$100 and it appears it is what they sent out for the TF 700's. They are a lot of people upset about it but my dock works great  and I'm happy.  I think is cheaper than the iPad for the same size. The 1920x1200 screen on this thing is great. The iPad is higher but its 4:3 not 16:10 mile the ASUS TF700. On the iPad movies get cropped with bars top and bottom so the 16:10 is full screen without bars.

I'm getting use to the way it works and its easier day by day. I'm playing with the slide typing right now and it seems to be working quit well. The auto correct seems to be pretty good too.

I've taken some videos today indoors that turned out pretty good. I'll use it more tomorrow at my only grand kids first birthday here in Des Moines.

Thanks again to both of you for the comments.

Cool beans and congrats on your new toy. Sounds like fun and I really don't have much to add. I picked up a Motoroal Xoom last year with my VISA rewards card so "free" is always good. Only has 32gb internal but I use a 32gb micro sd for vids and it works wel. It's just a wi-fi version which is fine for my needs. I take the dang thing with me everywhere it seems....gotta kill angry birds sometimes. Went into tablet fever I guess as I also bought an ASUS EP121 but that was before getting the Xoom. The Asus is way overkill for normal stuff but it runs an i5 processor and Win7 so it's basically my laptop for now since my regular 17" died.

Kinda related since we're talking Android but more for a bike connection. We have ipod tunes and iPhone interconnect options...(wonder what happened to the update on the new HD gizmo thing) but nothing for the Android based phones. Since I don't presently have a cellphone I'll be forced to get an iPhone if I want to have tunes and phone connected to the bike. It would be nice to have the option of iPhone or Android interface since both are in a fierce competition. Not a big deal I guess and using an old Nano for tunes will work I guess.

Cheers and enjoy the trons!  :2vrolijk_21:
