Old title
« on: August 11, 2012, 04:14:13 PM »

I have acquired an old motorcycle that was never issued a title. Since it was produced before 1981 I have not been able to search the vin# even through the DMV.

Does anyone have the ability to search a vin before 1981?

I am not sure how your state works but in Ohio a few years back when I had a car 36 dodge I had aquired 3rd or 4th hand.  Never got the title.  It still had a vin number on it.  I went to the local bmv.  They told me back then about 10 years or more ago that if the vehicle has not been registered in the last 7 years that they purge their coumputers and dump their files.  I would have to have it safty inspected by the highway patrol so they would make sure that in was not put together with stolen parts.  They checked the lights and stuff like that.   They gave me a piece of paper with the vin number that was on the firewall if i remember correctly and i went and had a new title made.  its was still titled as a 36 dodge.  I had no problems.  You should call you bmv or title department and see what they say.  I would tell them that you have had the bike for 10 or 13 years and lost the title and cant find it.  You took it apart when the engine blew up and you are now able to put it back together and see what they say. before you start spending any money.  You many need to do what I had to do.    But that what I would do first.  Each state is going to have diffrent rules for things like this.  Hope its easy for ya.       Todd.

Todd I have gone to the DMV and they have given me a set of directions to obtaining a title via filing an Indemnity Bond.
It must be inspected by a DMV license and theft inspector
Then if all is clear it must be appraised by two dealers and written up on their letterhead
Then a bond must be issued for one and one half [1.5] times the highest appraisal
Title fee is $40.00
Highway tax in the amount of 3% of the value of the bike determined by the Value schedule

but that still does not help in searching for a title if it already exists for it sure would save me some time and effort

A close friend of mine picked up a 62 BSA Supper Rocket at an Estate Sale in New Effington S.D. 15 years ago.  ($800 bucks)  And he had no title, only an receipt from the auction company..  When he got it back to California he went over to DMV and after several forms and couple of months he had a new title in the mail.  He did sign documents stating if the vehicle ever proven as stolen he would loose ownership of the vehicle along with any money invested.  The Rocket still sits in his garage un touched and in pretty good shape. I tried to buy it from him a few times, but every time i do he proclaims that he is going to do a full restore.. He is now 71 so i see that never happening,, i just hope i stay on his best friend list   :drink:

Do you have any friends that are police officers?  or I wonder if you went into the police station and gave them the vin number and told them you were thinking of buying this basket case motorcycle but the person can not find the title.  Is there a way they can run the title and see if it is stolen or been reported stolen.  or any thing like that.    If it comes back that it is.  You can say that the cell phone number that you have for them no longer works.  tell them it was on craigs list or something like that.  The other way sounds like a big headache.  and very expensive in the long run.  but if you just take a frame to them.  it might not be.

What the NC DMV has as a cross reference to the bikes vin is as a Mobile Home :nixweiss: but they can only go back to 1981 as all their pre 1981 vins have been purged from the database

Brian, In jersey we get the state police to do the search.
We do this all the time with BBTS, they come to the boat, do a pencil rub on the VIN and then we wait.

We then get the necessary paperwork back, go to MV for a title and then do whatever was the plan. We do this several times a year mostly with discarded boats that we are contracted to remove and dispose of. Can't dump them without a title.
