Okay...I did find it at a Harley dealer near me and will give it a try next time I detail my bike.

SOS or any other steel wool DOES scratch chrome. Try GOOP remover, it's cheap, can be bought at the Dollar Store or Big Lots, get the kind that is safe on plastic and will very little effort it will wipe away black on your heatshields and leave no lasting damage like steel wool/SOS.

When it comes to chrome or aluminium, the best that I have found is Californian Purple Polish here in Australia....I had assumed that it was developed over there in the US....still...it's not even mentioned....by the way, it is non abrasive and awesome, I'm surprised you Yanks are not raving about it...ha ha

road rub works pretty good used it for a long time until I came upon this...and it also works to make the white walls white...if your still running whitewalls!!

The Magic Eraser is hands down the best thing I have found to use on chrome! Using the Magic Eraser combined with Mothers Chrome Polish....there is not anything I have not been able to get off.

Oven Cleaner works better than anything i've ever tried..   Saturate on a rag and dap the boot mark areas, let it set for a few hours and wipe off.. that simple..  DON'T SPRAY THIS STUFF, you dont want any overspray on your paint, it will do damage...   if you want to remove really quick,, heat up up the pipes,,  i.e. let motor run awhile, then dab the areas,, let set for a few minutes and wipe off..

I have been using 0000 steel wool, never seen a scratch yet, and the black boot marks are gone...

I had a couple of marks on the pipes that I got on the very first day I got my bike. I still don't know exactly what got on them but I have had professional detailer's try diesel fuel as well as a host of other products to try and remove (you can imagine how pissed I was after seeing it after my first ride!) and nothing worked. After seeing this thread, I went on-line and ordered the Road Rub. The day I received it and before I got a chance to use it I went on a ride and thought I had dodged a plastic bag to find out about 50 miles later that I didn't dodge it and it was stuck to my front pipe (which I couldn't see when I was riding). I pulled off as much as I could (as I burnt the hell out of my fingers) and then rode home to see (pray) if the Road Rub was any good. Not only did it get all the bag off, it got rid of those original marks I had had since day 1.

Blu-Job works great on getting just about everything that gets melted/burned onto the pipes.

I finally put some marks on that I was having trouble getting off.  I tried all of my normal items and they did not work.  I think this will work with all marks, if not it is worth a try. 

After my ride yesterday I got a dry cloth and put on some gloves and rubbed the mark and it came right off.  The pipes are not hot enough to burn the cloth, but of course they will burn your hands.  Just be careful.

Just get the bike to operating temp and rub them off with a dry cloth.  One time I use a piece of wood behind the cloth and scrapped the mark.  Just be-careful with the hot pipes.

I've been successful using carb cleaner for years, then using Turtle Wax Chrome cleaner for the insoluble portion, if any.  Don't get agressive with the chrome cleaner as you could remove the chrome down to the nickel or copper plate.

If Road Rub is so good how comw it's so hard to find?  

Not an HD item, pricey for the size, no sales push etc.
When I first saw it and asked the counter guy if it really works he handed me a sample to go ou tand try. Came back in and bought one.

Works pretty good. If I have something other then just light boot marks I carefully use a razor blade to get the thicker pieces off.

I have also found that my pipes get so hot if I run them long enough (Blowing Rock, NC to Central New Jersey) most of it burns off anyway.
