After reading all these posts, it suddenly dawned on me that we all should be mad as hell at Harley.  First of all, we bought the most expensive piece of iron the MoCo makes at $35K-plus.  Secondly, they make a big deal out of the fact that the CVO Ultras come with heated grips.  Thirdly, I think that even though some may argue that we are isolated cases, I honestley believe that there are many others out there who are silent on their disgust with the POS grips Harley markets.  I'm to the point that I am ready to say "Screw it, I'm putting on Kuryakyn ISO non-heated grips" and forget about the hassle.  I've got heated gloves, but I really thought the heated grips were a nice accessory.  I'm through with the stress of trying to decide what to do about the damn heated grips, but I'm still thoroughly pissed at Harley for putting these inferior items on such an expensive machine and then blowing us off when we complain because we didn't buy the extended warranty.  Halleluiah, holy chit, where's the Tylenol!

I'd have to agree that after 5 years of BS, they should step up to the plate. There are rumors that the newer ones don't get as hot, which may very well have been the achilles heel. The older ones I had did get much hotter than the Heat Demons, to the point at 6, they were uncomfortable to hold bare handed. Perhaps the lower temps on the later models might have solved the problem? I think the jury is still out on that.

That said, you might want to try and find a local member who's done it before. It really isn't that tough of a job once you do it the first time. I have to admit, after getting stuck at 6,000+ feet on the Blue Ridge Parkway last week in a cold rain, and no heated gear/gloves, it sure was nice to flip on the heated grips to take the edge off.

This is too good not to pass along.  After much thought and agony, I decided to have the heated grips removed and put non-heated Ironside grips on now and think about whether to put the Heat Demons on at a later time.  Well, I took the bike in to my dealership and asked how much they would charge to take the heated grips off and install the new non-heated ones.  I was told a half-hour labor charge.  I thought this was very reasonable, but I was concerned when he said all they had to do was take the heated grips off and clip the wires.  No reason to pull them out of the handlebar.  I asked if that could cause a short or shock and he said they would just tape the power wire and there would be no issues.  Since it was only going to take a half-hour, I decided to wait.  After an hour and a half, I went back to the service dept. to see what the holdup was and was told that he was wrong and that the wires did have to be pulled out or the bike would be spitting out all kinds of codes.  I told him that my decision to take the old grips off was based on his half-hour estimate and that I was not going to pay for more than the estimate.  After another hour the bike was ready, so they had two and a half hours labor--removing the outer fairing, radio and heated grip wires and installing the new grips.  In the end, after some back and forth, I agreed to pay for one hour labor.  I guess I felt that was fair considering all the work they had to do.  What really pisses me off though is that I should have had them put the Heat Demons on since they already had the outer fairing off and the radio pulled.  But then they would have probably given me a three hour estimate.  You can't win sometimes.

Did you get the wiring back?  The small connector for power comes in handy for installing the Heat Demons later, though you can make up another one if needed.
