Rattle sound from vent on lowers
« on: August 18, 2012, 05:50:28 PM »

Has any one experienced any rattle sound from the vents on their lowers? I've noticed this for a while now and it is starting bug me.  I have not really got into it to see exactly what's going on but when it is making the noise I can put my hand on the vent and make it stop.  I was thinking of putting a small piece of weather strip on the lower so the vent doesen't vibrate on it.  :nixweiss:

Mine was delivered from factory not tightened.  Also bolts on bottom were loose.  Once I tightened everything up the rattle went away.

Lol a rattle ? Not a Harley. Man I just got back from a road trip 2100 miles round trip and well my antina fell off seat bolts gone and pegs almost fell off. Still have rattle coming from the front. Now I took it in for it's first service before I left so they could check everything so you can emagin my frusteration when I pulled up to the dealer when I got back intown. They said they were sorry and they would make sure all is taken care of. To make matters worse I had an emblem replaced at 500 miles as the stock one fell off. Well when I got it back for the emblem replacement it had looked like the guy took a spachala and tried to scrape it off. Boy was I pissed. So now they have my bike so they can have the tank reprinted. So as of right now I'm not to happy. Oh and on my trip the bike kept stalling out. Give it some gas and would pop and die. Anyways hope you find your rattle. :)

That's the kind of work most dealers do.

One cautionary note for those who decide to "tighten everything up".  If you go inside the fairing pocket and put a wrench on the nut for the vent pivot, be very careful about how hard you crank on it.  The stud is actually a carriage bolt, and the head of that bolt is only secured by the flats engaging a square hole in the plastic of the vent.  If you manage to damage the plastic such that the bolt just turns, it will be very difficult to remove the nut to replace the parts.

I added some black rubber door edge guard material to the bottom of the opening on my lowers to keep the vent from rubbing or rattling back in 2005.  It is still there, looks like is was meant to be there, and works fine to reduce both rubbing and rattles.

Having never owned a bagger before I didn't know what the hell was going on when I first heard that annoying rattle. I was sitting at a stop sign the afternoon that I bought the bike and a dude pulls up beside me in a little rice burner car of some sort. He has his window down and I guess he heard the rattle since he looked over at me and kind chuckled. Pissed me off.

I've looked at tightening up the pivot bolt but that's not the problem. The vent is rattling against the lower housing. I guess the fact that my 103 shakes like a 98 year old Parkinson's patient after 10 cups of coffee doesn't help matter any. I never thought about the weather stripping. Might be on to something there dude.

That is funny!  I think I'm gonna try some weather strip or something to see if I can't quiet it down.

Must be riding too fast.  ::)

Seriously, that has been a common problem over the years, and you can fix it if you very carefully tighten the nut for the pivot.  If it's still in warranty, make the dealer do it.  That way if they overtighten it and strip out the plastic, they can pay to replace the vent.  There is a simple toothed plastic detent device at that pivot, but Harley doesn't use a real spring to maintain tension on it.  If snugging the nut up doesn't work, perhaps removing the part Harley calls a spring and replacing it with a real one might help.

Ok well I went to tighten the nut and found that the vent was crooked.  I moved it back and forth a few times and it popped back into place. This was the left lower vent and I think that because of my size 15 boot and trying to shift, I'm catching the vent when it is open and possibly popped it out of alignment. I'm gonna keep a close eye on it though.
