just found an article in American Iron magazine on this oil leak problem     november issue

go to page128 and 129

seems the leak can be bad cases on engine or transmission

this bike is going back to the dealer for repairs

also sent a letter to Harley Davidson about this problem will let you know what comes of it

I've got about 4500 miles on the FLHRSEI2 and I've noticed a fair amount of oil seepage that stains the silver engine finish. It's very noticable, but not enough of a leak to get oil on the garage floor. The bottom of the engine case is almost black, but I suspect much of that is road grime. Also a bit of seepage where the engine case and tranny butt up to each other. certainly will keep and eye on it. I'm sure H-D will make any problems right for us!

A friend of mine has a 2000 FLHT standard. He had this problem around 20000 miles. He had the extended warranty, and the dealer fixed it. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the silver finish parts, which is common to our bikes as well as the standards, or if the black engine bikes just can't see the stain.

Before I read this post I noticed that most of the 2003 103CI SERK's out there evidenced the same oil "STAIN" as mentioned here. Sadly, my bike also had the signature oil tatoo upon delivery.  My dealer didn't make an issue of it, other than they would take care of the problem if it got any worse. I thought for the price of these CVO bikes the factory shouldn't let this persistant problem go unchecked prior to delivery.  Silver motor finish or black, any problem should have been dealt with and remedied.

It must be a magic gasket because there is no gasket between the cases...

Hi guys,  my first post here  :D..  the only leak on my '03 was from the lines attatching to my oil cooler.  They were very loose!  I had a chrome inner installed on my ride at my 1k maintenance.  Been clean as a bell.  I'm at 8.5k now.

i think the oil cooler is an issue for oil leaks.
i just got mine back from the stealer. they had to back out the threads on the nipples that the hoses connect to, and put sealant on them. he also changed the hoses and clamps. all no charge.
i dont know why they don't use teflon tape.
lets see how long it lasts before it starts leaking again.
if it does happen, i will put teflon on it myself.

I believe that up to the 2002 the trans had a plug in the case which some reported that the trans was removed and the plug resealed, but the newer models do not have the plug and the problem has been , first, sweating between the engine and trans being that the engine warms up faster and second a leak in the case joints of the engine that comes out between the engine/ trans. The cure lies with the dealer and how much he is willing to do for you. [smiley=1syellow1.gif]
