Front wheel bearings
« on: August 20, 2012, 04:37:13 AM »

Just wondering how many people have had to have front wheel bearings replaced, on what model year, & what mileage?

Just had to do my 09, 20000 miles, at the usual breathtaking cost of US$157 (so "low" because I took the wheel only to the dealer, not having the tool to do it myself.)

Dealer tech suggested they've had to replace a lot of 09.

At 40,000 miles but when I took off the tire the right bearing fell apart. I plan on changing them at 30,000.

On my 05 I bought new bearings and gave them to shop to replace if needed when the tires were changed. Gave them back to me, said the bearings were fine. 54000 miles

Yes, I've never needed them on any of my bikes before, Porthole, so it looks like the dealer is right, and 09 was a problem.  He said that when they started doing more than they'd done previously, he had a look inside the bearing, and there was next to no grease.  Doubtless yet another example of the cheap Chinese krapp that makes up most of our bikes these days.  >:(

Jim, can't say what size the local overall cohort might be but have had two of the locals whom I play with have bad wheel bearings before 25k miles.  Don't remember their mileage exactly but know both were less than 25,000.  I didn't even realize my wheel bearing tool kit had the adapters for the newer bearing size until the first one of those two laid down.  Almost ordered before looking to be sure.   Oops.

I weighed up whether to buy the tool - which I hope not to need again - or pay the dealership, Don.   Buying the tool was more expensive, so I thought I'd grudgingly pay the dealer.   But this is yet another disgrace - bikes costing this much and needing more repairs at 20,000 miles, with warranty expired. Light inside my tourpak has given up too, and they want $140  :o here for a replacement.  What a joke - I don't think so!  I still desperately need to replace the compensator too, but they are on back order still, due to another fiasco with crap made in China.

I'm not EVER going to buy another new HD.  They've taken a lot of my money - not just the 3 new CVO Ultras in 3 years, and the quality has slid further and further south while the price has shot further and further north.  I just don't understand people paying the price they want for them now, because it's simply a rip off with premium (and then some) prices for a pile of poorly assembled Chinese junk.   If I were Bill Gates, I still wouldn't pay their prices.  >:(
