New lowers and Headlight issues
« on: August 20, 2012, 02:05:27 PM »

Put the HID's on the SERG about 16 months ago. 3 months ago I added the new style lowers with vents and speakers. Had to replace the brackets that hold the fairing on. Since the new supports tilt the nose of the fairing down I'm out of adjustment when trying to tilt the headlights up to their correct position. Anyone else run into this issue? any suggestions?

I'm looking at the '09 SERG Parts Catalog.  The part that attaches the headlights to the outer fairing is the Trim, part #67959-01.  It appears that is the parts that would control how the lamps fit to the outer fairing and thus sets the limits of adjustment.  I'm wondering if that part is different on the 2012's and thus sits the lamps at a higher angle....   :nixweiss:  Hope this helps.

Good point Greg, I'm not sure. Just know that I'm out of adjustment and they are not high enough. And you know the HID's have a very defined pattern. Doesnt bleed very much. Hope someone has a fix!

Mike,

Ronnie's HD has an OEM Harley-Davidson® Parts Finder.  It appears to me there is a new part that looks slightly different:

The new part is TRIM,DUAL HDLAMP #67959-10   $39.99

The change that raised the fairing .800" and tilted it down 2° at the nose occurred on the 2010 models.  Looking at the 2010 part list, several part numbers changed besides the mount brackets, and two that may influence your problem are the Trim (67959-10) and the adjusting Stud (67980-10).  The actual Headlamp Assy number also changed, to 73376-10.

It's quite possible they had to change the adjusting stud and trim to allow the headlamps to be adjusted higher.  You might want to look at those two items first.  Just a guess on my part, but it makes sense when they tilted the fairing down at the nose it may have used up the available upward adjustment.

I did this change three years ago (new brackets w/new style lowers etc). Just readjusted the headlamps after changeover and been riding ever since.

Mike, If the fairing was only changed two degrees as Jerry describes, it does not make sense that you cannot adjust your headlights if the fairing has been put on properly.  If the fairing is not seated peoperly on the 2 metal hooks near the radio, it will point down and you will not be able to properly adjust the headlights. Have you checked that?

Yup.. hanging the RG outer fairing is a PITA~

Once you've done it 20 times or so (my '09 was aimed too high to use HIDs without being adjusted down substantially)

I'd think changing to the '10 -up brackets would not require an adjustment change....  but I havent been there yet... I'd like to try the new LEDs

Greg I believe it is on correctly. Its been on for a couple of months with no problem but when you try to adjust up you run out of adjustment. I will need to dig into it to really find out.

I know one bike locally that changed the mount brackets to add lowers as you've done.  We didn't have to buy new headlight hardware.  There was adequate adjustment in the original headlight adjusters.  The adjusters are a pain in the ass to get at.  Are you certain you've used all the travel the offer?

Did the shop use all the adjustment available with all three adjuster screws?  The top screw they probably got at with the fairing removed.  You can get a little more height with the bottom screws too though.  Just have to turn them both the same amount so you don't end up pointing left or right.

I did the same mod and had the same problem. There are 3 adjustment screws, the 2 you can get to by the holes in the inner fairing and 1 that is at the top of the headlight assembly. If you adjust the upper screw to bring the HD assembly back it works fine. Down side is you have to remove the outer fairing to get to it. I also replaced the outer trim with the one of a 2010 and up.
