Should I buy a 2008 CVO Ultra? 110 trouble?
« on: August 20, 2012, 09:39:14 PM »

I currently own a 2006 SEUC with 103 motor.  Runs well.  I saw a 2008 SEUC on the dealer floor and was thinking of working a deal to upgrade. The 2008 is 110 ci, 6-speed, Brembro brakes, ABS, 6 gal gas tank.  It has 30,000 miles on the speedo.  Question is about the motor.  Others are telling me that the 2007 and 2008 110 SE motors had problems with the rear head gaskets and there was a "recall" campaign.  They are telling me that I may be looking for trouble if I go with the 2008 SE 110.  I'd like to hear from other 2008 SEUC owners.  Have you had problems?  I think it's a good sign if the bike has 30,000 miles on it. I would think problems with the motor would have occurred already.  Also, I think it would a good idea if the dealer throws in a 2 or 3 year extended warrantee.  Any thoughts?  ?stay with the 2006 or go with the 2008?  I will probably trade up in a few years again.  Thanks for the input.

The dealer should be able to tell if the recall was done or not...other than that you should be fine. Getting an extended warranty thrown in always a plus. I would negotiate the price before asking for the warranty or they will just include it in the price and tell you they are giving it to you.

If it was me I would look for an 09 and up, the new frame made a world of difference, my 2010 rides a lot better than my 07 did.

Have the dealership pull up the service history on the bike.  They can easily determine if the bike was built before or after Harley made the upgrade changes in production and if the bike actually needed the upgrade and in fact had it performed.  The fact that you know about and asked about the problems can also help you with the negotiations if you decide to buy that bike.

As for the question of should you or shouldn't you, I think that depends on several things.  First and foremost, I wouldn't pay any sort of a premium for the bike.  Check NADA or Kelly Blue Book for average values for a 2008 CVO Ultra with 30k miles.  Second, I'd insist on them throwing in at least a one or two year ESP (follow mjb765's advice, bring this up after the price has been negotiated and agreed upon).  Then if you wind up buying it, don't worry about all the stories and just ride it like you stole it.  Harley's in general aren't very reliable, and yet people keep buying them anyway.  If you really want the bike, and you go into the whole thing with your eyes wide open and can get it at a fair price, then do it.

My misses 08 CVO Dyna is in the shop getting the tappets replaced.  She sold it with under 5k on it and the new owner only put about 1k on it when he heard the tappets let loose.

IMO you are going to spend alot of cash to upgrade from an 06 to an 08 and there just isnt that much of a difference.  Im going to guess the dealer will want 6-7k difference.

I would hold out for a 09+ if you must have the 110.

Agreed......'12 rides and handles a lot 'tighter' than the '08 did even with new mounts and bushings

I have an '08 Dyna with the 110 which I bought new in 2010. Upgrades had been done. So far (fingers crossed!) I have put 24000 miles on it with no issues.

I second the idea of an '09 or more recent. It's a world of difference.

My .02 cents:

First, I would not pay much more than $24K..... and that's only if it is in pristine condition... and with some upgrades, like exhaust, brand new tires, new brakes, and such.  Make sure you get all the stuff too... garage door opener module, headset, and, oh yeah, the Gold Key & CVO dust cover.
Absolutely require that the dealer include a warranty... trust me on this one!

I had an 08 SEUC... Copper Canyon & Stardust Silver.  Absolutely Beautiful bike.  Mechanically, the absolute worst HD I have ever owned.  I could start a list of the problems I had, but you probably don't have time.  I strongly suspect that some of my problems were just happenstance, because, based on this forum, I had problems that others have not had, but then I also had many of the problems that everyone has had with the 08's too.  I almost swore off HD because of my experience with my 08.

I guess bottom line advise from me is:  If you can buy it cheap enough with a warranty and if you are prepared to spend some of your money to fix the inherent problems of the 08's, go for it.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with after market parts and enough $$$$... just get a steal of a deal if you buy it.

My two cents (does that make 4 cents now Lrebel?...ha, ha) is get the 2009 or better.  I, too, have owned pre 2009 ultra's (3) and while I really enjoyed those bikes, the 09 frame makes a WORLD of difference.  I'm 5'6 and it seems the 2009+ frame fits me much better.  Can't speak for the taller riders, however.

Bottom line is even with these 4 cents, it's what YOU want.  Get what you want and ride the poop out of it  :bananarock:

...and don't leave that showroom without some kind of WARRANTY on a used bike...never know where it's been  :nixweiss:

Well, I'm going to chime in here which I don't do often...but since I own 2 "08" bikes, I thought I'd give my 3 cents worth.  I love my "old" frame bikes.  I have tested the new frame bikes and absolutely hate the stiff ride they offer.  The hammock seat on the Ultra does help, but until HD fixes the suspension, I'm happy with what I've got.  I am 6'3" and have 35000 miles on my CVO Ultra and I have an 08 FLHX with 28000 on the clock.  Both run like swiss watches.  My Ultra did have the 0905 gasket and head upgrade, however it never leaked either before or after getting that done.  I've done minor updates over the years, but both bikes have bone stock engines and exhaust systems.  I use Syn 3 in all three holes.

Your opening line says a lot. '06 Ultra with a 103 that runs well. Unless you really want another bike (and many of us understand that!), what's wrong with what you have? The '06 is the last of the CVO 103s (not the same as the standard 103s today) and it's the first year of the CVO Ultra. It's also only one of two years that came with the Camel Hump, and while some don't like it, it is one of the things that makes that Ultra different from all the others.

On the other hand there is a lot to be said for ABS and a six speed gearbox. I say wait till the water heads come out.....whenever that will be.

I tradded an 09 FLHT with the 103, 255 cams, stage 1 intake, exhaust, and tuning for my 06 FLHTCUSE.

I think the old frame fits me better, the 06 103 will run circles around the 09 I upgraded, and the 150-ish pounds that the new frame is carrying over the old frame make a huge difference in performance.

My 06 was upgraded to a 6 speed as well.

I just dont think there is enough difference between an 06 and an 08 to justify the cost.

My misses 07 RK has stage 1 intake and exhaust and a PCIII, it runs great.  This winter Im going to do the 103 upgrade on hers.
