Lowering the CVO
« on: August 20, 2012, 10:23:03 PM »

Anyone know if you can lower the CVO, and how much it may cost? It's hell having shot legs. No real problem now holding it up, but with the experience of last Ultra, lowering it makes it feel a lot better.

You can easily lower it approximately one inch front and rear either using parts from H-D or from the aftermarket.  I would not recommend going any lower than that, as ground clearance, tire to fender clearance, and ride & handling can be significantly impacted.  Better safe than sorry.

I always suggest people first try the easier things before messing with the suspension.  Different seats can lower you instead of the bike, and better riding boots with a thicker high traction sole also help.

I did not like the ride when I lowered my EG one inch so I returned it to stock height and bought a pair of boots with a heel.

Air bag it. Best of both worlds. There are a few good kits out for your bike. Ranging from 1200 on up for a kit. Yaffe has one and they have good reviews. Can ride all the way up then around town or just in the parking lot drop it down. This is what I'm going to do this winter along with 12 inch apes

Jerry's post said it all.  Definitely try the simpler things first.  It must be tough to ride after being shot in the legs.   :nixweiss:   ;)

It is real tough to ride after being shot in the legs. It helps to be tough.  :D I have been through this before, but didn't noticed a lowering kit for the CVO. The way they have the socks and fork suspension written, was kind of confusing. I lowered my last Ultra by 1 inch and it was great. I also had changed seats. Plan on getting some new boots also. Thanks all!

The Street Glide CVO is lowered in the rear only.  Ultra's have never been lowered, front or rear.  I'm pretty sure hep0950 has a 2012 CVO Ultra.

I bought a 2011 SESG from a guy in Florida who lowered it an inch using aftermarket forged brackets to which the shocks are attached. When I picked the bike up last week from  its' 1000 mile service, the tech told me that when he took it for a post service test ride, he noticed that I had the aftermarket lowering kit and recommended that I take it off, because it will cause premature wear in the swing arm bearings. I told him to go ahead and remove them and he did it while I waited, which was about 15 minutes, if that. When I asked what I owed for the removal, he said "nothing". I got on the bike and left. The bike does ride better now.

hep0950, I would suggest you talk to an upholstery shop. I had the seat on my 09 contoured to fit me. The guy at the shop called after he had reshaped the seat and installed gel pad. I went down and sat on it with tennis shoes and told him to make it a less wider towards the front. He did a little more work on it and I can put both feet flat on the ground with tennis shoes. It is too hot around here in the summer for boots with big heels, but that is a good idea. I imagine a shoe maker could put a thicker sole and heels on any pair of boots. Anyways, the seat job including the gel pad cost me $450.00. Didn't make any changes to the passenger section of the seat, and the seat heaters work fine. CAHDBIKER. Just for the record I am 5'9" so my legs are kind of short.
