Since there isn't a 2013 SESG?
« on: August 21, 2012, 07:28:22 PM »

I wanted a 13 SESG bad and had plans all along in getting one, now no luck.. So could you put a Harley fairing gauges radio etc on the 13' road king for under $5,000. I don't know what all is involved, but I would think it is possible except the wiring harness being a problem?  Opinions?

Just buy a new 2012 SESG while they're still around. It always costs much more (not to mention headaches) to buy something and upgrade the bike making it something it wasn't born as.  That and taking into account resale down the road..... your better off buying a 2012 SESG, better hurry though if you want a "new" one, soon they'll all be gone.  A slightly used 2012 SESG well cared for is another good option if you wait too long to land a new one. Good luck with your final choice...it's your money so do what you want, even though we want you to do what we want.   :nixweiss:

You'll be hard pressed to find a 2012, but you might get lucky.

If you really want a SG I'd recommend your options in the following order:
1. Get a 2012.  They're out there.  New or Used.  You might even save a few bucks.
If you need a 2013:
2. Start with an Ultra and make the TP detachable.  There are several examples on this site to look at where folks have done a great job to theirs in the past.
3.  Start with a SERG.  It's fairly inexpensive ($1500 + paint) to change the shark to a bat.  The wiring is mostly all the same.  It's just brackets and plastic.
4.  Stay with a SERG.  A lot of folks like these bikes.  Some even have convinced themselves that the shark fairing is somehow superior.  If you explore this route, rent a sharknose to ride for a few days.  They are different and have different aerodynamic properties than a bat.  I made the mistake of buying one based on others' opinions.  That's how I know the approximate price for option 3.
5.  Have you ever owned a RK?  They're a great bike in their own right.  Now they have a sound system too!

6.  Do not start with a RK and try to put a FLHX fairing on it!  The wiring will be a nightmare!  Maybe something like a removable fairing that is available in the aftermarket, but don't try to make a RK a SG by adding the full inner and outer batwing.  You'll end up with a heartache for all the better choices you could have made.

Good luck!

The ultimate Street Glide? Buy an anniversary edition Ultra, make the tour pak removable, upgraded to the anniversary edition RK rear fender, bags, tail lights, etc (factory painted to match) and you have a pretty bad arss bike!!

Get the '13 SERG.  Rode my buddy's SERG...rode well, comfortable, cut thru the air nice.  The RG is an acquired taste...and it may be my next bike.

I have a 08' SERK. My friend had a 09' SERG which I have rode before. I did like how it handled, I just wanted a new bike with the new frame, some tunes and something to block the wind a bit. I figured with the knee fairings and hard bags with speakers I just need a fairing. It's probably not a smart thing to try to do.

I won't be ale to sell my bike around here anytime soon, because it's getting late in the season, so my hope was a trade in on a 13'. I might just go with the Road King again or just keep mine even though I want something new.
