Exhaust
« on: August 23, 2012, 03:34:19 PM »

My new to me 06 FLHTCUSE has a set of V&H slash cut slip ons, oem air cleaner, and from what I can tell no tuning.

The bikes pops badly on decel and backfires alot.  About half the time it dies on cold startup, but is ok after it warms up a bit.

Im planning on a stage 1 intake and a PCV retrofit.  Thats not going to happen until xmas, wifes tuition is due.

Do you see any issues with me installing my 09 touring mufflers to try and solve some of my decel and backfire issures until I do the intake and tuning?

Your mufflers wont' hurt a thing.
It may be advisable to check the entire exhaust system for leaks or loose nuts and clamps.
REALLY check the pipe connection at the rear port where it branches off to the left side, it may be cracked there.

I did a visual inspection with the heat shields on and did not see any cracks or signs or corrosion.

I held a bic BBQ lighter to all the joints with the bike running to see if the flame flickered.  All looks good.

The bike is running rougher, it sputters at low rpm and the decel popping and backfiring is getting worse.

My first thought was that the bike is 6 years old and had 5000 miles on it and it needed to be run, but after a 1000 miles it is not running any better.

Any other ideas?

I took about a 25 mile spin on the bike with the 09 Muffs on.  It ran perfect.

The V&H are staying off.

I can buy a used set of 06 CVO muffs for about $125 or I can trade the V&H for a set of used 80732-09 SE muffs.

What woul dbe the better way to go for me assuming I keep the oem intake and tuning?

IMO the stock cvo mufflers look pretty good and they work well. Either one would be YOUR choice. I doubt if either will give you problems as the rest of the bike is stock.

Does the oem exhaust with the cats flow well enough to upgrade to a stage 1 air filter like the big sucker?

If not, how about a SE exhaust without cats?

Sure loud pipes save lives, but I prefer more of the quiet side.

Ive got a post in the exhaust forum but Im not getting any replies.

Do the oem mufflers on an 06 FLHTCUSE flow well enough to support a big sucker and tuning?

I pulled the V&H the PO put on and have no desire to put them back on, this is my DD and they are just to loud for me.

If the oem muffs will not flow enough, what would you recommend?

Im not really hung up about more power, I want the bike to run cooler and no backfiring or decel popping.

The '06 CUSE had cats in the mufflers,, look into installing a set of Fullsac CVO cores & you get to keep the OE look

I really want to keep the bike within legal sound limits, which I think is 60 dcb.

We spend some long days traveling and I hate getting off the bike and having my ears ring for another 2-3 hours.

Is there a chart anywhere that will tell me how much the various oem muffs flow?

I would like to do a stage 1 intake matched to the quietest oem muffs and tuning.

My goal is for the bike to run cooler and produck peak hp/tq within the confines of 60 dcb.

I worked around very loud diesel engines for most of my adult life, I just like things to be quiet.

I am running the D&D Police Interceptor slip ons. They are free flowing (can look through them end to end), yet still have a quieter sound.

there is a oem air cleaner for the baggers that was originally for police bikes - its the same ham can but with larger air intake

i have a spare set and im going to machine them to hold a se filter but still have the police can - quieter but more flow with good rain resistance [i ride in the rain and sometimes snow and the bike gets dirty - but i get to ride more<grin>]

I bought a set of NIB oem 06 FLHTCUSE mufflers for $120 today.

I would really like to mate them to a Big Sucker and a PCV retrofit.

I cant find any info on how many CFM the muffs flow.

My misses 07 RK has V&H Dresser Duals, stage 1 intake, and a PCIII.  It runs great but a little loud for me.
