Stock Primary Chain Adjuster question
« on: August 26, 2012, 10:50:37 PM »

Just had my '11 SERGU in for the 1000 mile service . . . When I brought it in I asked the Service writer to hace the tech check out the compensator as there seemed to be a "clacking" noise that was coming from the front  of the primary case. After the service was completed (Redline MTF in the Primary) the tech claimed there were no unusual noises and that all is OK.

After paying up and getting ready to go, I started the bike and "holy chit" the "clacking" noise now sounded like someone dumped a can of nuts and bolts in there. I got the Service Manager out to listen and the look on his face was not good! He suggested that the noise was not good and that it was probably due to the Compensator bolt backing out. They took the bike back into the shop and 1-1/2 hours later they brought it back out claiming the Compensator bolt was correctly torqued and the noise was from the primary chain being out of adjustment. The tech told me he manually adjusted the adjuster 2 clicks to remove the slack. The noise is now minimal.

My question is . . . I thought the adjuster was supposed to be automatic. If it isn't automatically adjusting, is it defective?? The Service guys couldn't answer my question.

2nd question . . . Is there a way, short of pulling the primary cover, to make the adjustment take place.

I appreciate any thoughts.

Take a look at the Hayden M6 chain tensioner. Keeps the correct tension on the chain all the time because it floats on springs. Been on the market since 1989 and the new BT07 addresses your application.

X2 on the Hayden....

But I was also told once that if you take the bike out and accelerate hard through the gears the adjuster with take the slack out of the chain. The problem with that is, it can sometimes make the chain too tight, Then the only way to loosen it back up is to remove the cover and reset the adjuster and start all over again.

The adjuster is supposed to be fully automatic, and it is never supposed to require manual adjustment.  Other folks have posted around here in the past with the same problem, the new bike never adjusts and the chain gets very slack.  One person mentioned that his ace dealership tech smacked it with a screwdriver and proclaimed it fixed.  I think I suggested that was BS and the part should have been replaced.

In theory you could take actions that snatch the chain, like popping the clutch or banging some hard downshifts in hopes of forcing the adjuster to release, but why would you want to abuse your bike just to compensate for a bad part?  If it happens again, insist they replace the adjuster.

Thanks Kathy . . . based on the information on this forum and your website, I have already been looking at the BT07. Does the kit include a new primary cover gasket??

It makes my blood go beyond the boiling point to yet again have to spend money to make this bike work the way it is supposed to. But, that is not your fault . . . just venting a bit. Thanks for offering your product.

I just installed the Hayden...the kit does not include any gaskets.

You don't necessarily need a new gasket each time you remove and reinstall the outer primary cover, especially if it hasn't been all that long since the last time it was changed.

No, it does not come with gaskets or primary fluid. Like Jerry says, open the case carefully and you can probably reuse the gasket. Catch the fluid and reuse that too, if it's fairly new.

As far as needing to readjust . . Not true. Remember we float on springs so the tensioner moves up and down as the bike demands. Only time you need to adjust it is when you've had enough chain stretch to warrent putting a shim under the springs to tighten the gap and that could easily be 25-30 thousand miles.
