Brake Dust excessive
« on: August 30, 2012, 01:26:26 PM »

Does anyone else think the stock brake pads produce an excessive amount of brake dust? I am noticing that my bike is getting coated with a black dust after I have been riding for a couple hours. Has anyone else had this experience? If so, did you find a solution and what was it? Thanks

If it bothers you, the Lyndall pads produce less dust.

Couldn't agree more!  The black dust is like coal dust on my chrome rims  :-\.  I'm gonna change them like Terry suggested when they need replaced.

It's been very common with Harley brake pads for many years.  It was also very common on some brands of automobiles, such that the wheels would quickly look like they were painted black.  It's all related to what kinds of materials they use in the formulation of the pads.  For instance, carbon black is, as the name implies, black.  Many automotive companies have responded to the complaints about the huge amount of black brake dust by changing to better materials.  Harley seems to be happy with the cheaper nasty stuff.  Strange for a company that promotes looks and style over function, since all that dust makes the wheels look bad. :confused5:

If you want significantly less brake dust and better brake feel, chuck those Harley pads and buy some Lyndall Z pads.  They are an organic pad that is very easy on rotors, are quieter than the stock metallic pads, have excellent wear characteristics, have a more linear feel and response, and cost about the same as the Harley pads.  I didn't bother to wait until the stock pads wore out, I changed mine the first year I owned the bike.

Hey Jerry, I can't seem to find any Lyndall pads on the Internet that fit my 2012 SG.  :nixweiss: Even checked their web site and they only listed up to 2010.

They are very slow to update the web site; I've noticed that in years past as well.

The brake pads for all 2008 to present Touring models are the same, and for Lyndall pads the number would be 7254 front and rear.  Add a Z on the end of the number for the recommended Z pad formulation.  If you're doing a Google search, look for "lyndall 7254 Z".

Lyndall's are a great product, I have had them on the last two bikes, much less dust and better stopping. Used DP's ceramic before finding the Lyndall's and they are also a good product, little to no dust with them.
