My wife and I had the exact same thing happen to us in Nashville Tn a few year ago. We were traveling on I40 east out of Nashville and a pickup hauling sheets of Styrofoam in front of us had three sheet fly into the air in front of us. It went 40 or 50 feet into the air, flipping back and forth. I maintained my speed and the foam boards stayed afloat above me. Just after we passed under it, it hit the pavement and looked like it exploded. I knew what it was and was watching it in the back of the truck. My intuition told me what was going to happen before it did, I just didn't take heed. I will in the future. I now look in the back of pickups, trailers, and get away from any truck hauling materials as quickly as I can. I do not follow any vehicle close nor do I ride beside them.

Couple years ago a small group of us were riding up Hwy 49 to Georgetown.  Right before Cool in a tight turn we had the surprises of our life. In the middle of the road were several sheets of drywall sterwan over both lanes. Surprised the hell out of me that no went down, you could not avoid running over the mess. We stoped and pushed as much as we could off the road and called CHP to report it.  It was obvious that someone's load slid out their truck, and it pisses me off that people are so stupid not secure their loads. I think stupid people should be locked up in a stupid people prison, wouldn't that be exciting.   :o

Two bags of sandblasting sand split open and spread across both lanes on Groat Road in Edmonton on May long week-end in '86....went down, the curving away concrete barrier stood me back up.....wobbled across both lanes and kissed the concrete with the other side...all I got was sore knees....and didn't ride for 20 years....bought my first Harley May long week-end '06.

My biggest problem is all the dead animals on the road.

Between the dead animals the counties and states no longer pick up, the dead hunks of truck tires they also don't pick up, and the poor patch jobs on all the potholes, riding has become more and more like a slalom event.  It's definitely not a good idea to let your mind wander too much while riding these days.

A buddy of mine lives right on a corner and every time I go over there I get his broom out of his garage and sweep that turn off.  there is about 20 bikes go down there a year.  No major injures or anything cause it is a sharp turn.  It usually is unfuimular riders that go down.  He does not ride so he does not think about it.  He does every now and then after he mows and see alot of pebbles he says.  But usually after he talks to me on the phone or if a bike goes down.  He has stored a few bikes that were undrive able in his garage for people to come back and get later.   He has been trying to get his township to put some blacktop in the pot hole around the curve there for a while with no avail.  He at least got them to put up a loose gravel sign at my nagging at him.  lol.  I went with him to a township meeting.  If more people would do this in their areas on these back roads this would help rides that pay attention to signs.    Some times all it would take is a letter.

As a Deputy Sheriff (retired) I have seen hundreds of trucks hauling crap that is not secured and they can be cited for a loose or leaky load. The only problem with the law is it's after the fact. In other words they have to loose part of there load before you can cite them at least in Indiana. The ones I always liked the best are the guys hauling dirt and sand. They have an automated type tarp to cover the load but are to lazy to operate it. They would rather sand blast your vehicle or face.
