High oil pressure
« on: September 01, 2012, 06:16:47 PM »

Been noticing the last month my oil pressure has been higher than normal it has always run around 32-35 while cruising at 60-70 mph lately it has been running around 45 I used my mechanics gauge on the bike and had readings of 44 at 3000 rpm and 22 at idle this was after a ride then just sitting in the garage i know it was hot enough as it was going into safe mode while idling does anybody have ideas. low pressure I understand i have not had any problems with high oil pressure
Thanks Chuck

If you really have a sudden and significant increase in oil pressure verified with an accurate gauge, I would submit that this is not a good thing.  Check the oil and make sure it hasn't turned into molasses, make sure the oil filter and oil cooler aren't blocking flow, start looking for blocked oil passages.

No opinions how this could happen.

Did you tear it down or is at the dealer?   Who installed the cams?  Anything wrong with cam plate?  Did the oil pump stay on the motor when cams were being replaced?
I would think the crack in the case where the oil pump goes would cause a decrease in pressure?
I don't know what happened.  Let us know how it pans out.  Good  luck.

, that isn't good. It was causing sumping which can cause a increase in pressure. Have them check the runout on the crank. If it's very excessive this could cause the pump to get in a bind and possibly cause the block to crack. Did a indy install cams or dealer or at home? I've never seen this one before but I hope somehow the MoCo will help.

I tore it down as I had Installed the cams 8000 miles ago left oil pump in. crank runout is.002. I took some scotch brite and smoothed out the crack .Took lots of pictures and talked to dealer it is scheduled to go in Oct 16 they said if they need to send to Harley they would get the pictures from me. As of right now the oil presure is good.

Is that a crack or a tooling mark from the machining in your photo?  If it's a crack, it's odd it doesn't continue into the cast areas of the case.  Can you post a photo of the area after you smoothed it with scotch brite?  I've never seen any marks in this area before...cracks or otherwise.

As far as your oil pressure, I wonder if the by-pass in your cam plate was sticking closed?
