Battery Life
« on: September 04, 2012, 03:51:38 PM »

Hi to everyone, hope you all put in some fun miles this summer. The battery in my 09SEUC lasted for 4 years. It just got replaced. Now I am going to put a new battery in my 95 Heritage.( it is 4 years old) Both are always on Battery Tender Plus units when I am not riding. Just for kicks I looked in my 09 service manual under battery replacement and maintaince and I found an interesting chart. See attachement. So what this means that if you buy a new battery that may have been sitting on the shelf for 2 months or so you should always check the voltage and charge it accordingly before installation. I used to ask the parts guy if I should throw a charge on a battery when I got a new one and the answer was always the same. "No need it is ready to go" So I will be checking all batteries from now on to make sure they are at 100% charge before installation. I think it may add a little life to them.Just something I wanted to pass along. CAHDBIKER

About 3-4 years is all you are going to get and the battery continue to be reliable, Over 4 years is pushing it.

Almost 8 years was a lifetime for a battery in a motorcycle. :D :D

It was actually back in the winter when I changed it see this thread - BREAKING NEWS about d00d.

I will add that my bike stays on a Battery Tender when it is parked and I believe that is the only reason the battery lasted as long as it did.

The one in my SERG is 5 years old now.  It shows no signs of slowing down and turns the light on the BT green long before the brand new SEUC's battery will.  I figure it's got at least two years left and it may be on the "D00d Replacement Cycle" before it's all over with.

5+ years should be easy if you keep 'em on a BT religiously.

It got to be a game (challenge) for me (also a testimonial on how effective the Battery Tenders are)... so many had said it was crazy to trust a battery that old, how it would let me down, they (battery) should be replaced after a couple years, etc., etc. that I had to go for as long as I could before replacing it. My Mom did say I was hardheaded when I was younger I guess I still possess some of that trait. ;D

The Game is to figure out when to change it, before you are caught having to change it on the road. That is at least a $100 mistake!

Not to mention the 'inconvenience'.  But, the bigger 'trick' is to figure out when to replace the cam chain tensioners w/o constantly tearing into the motor to check the wear pattern. I have heard of some that are so proactive as to change batteries ea. year, but as the cost of batteries goes up, up, up, that becomes a less desireable solution to the trick.  spyder

I,ve been averaging about 3 yrs on each of my three. The longest about 3-1/2 yrs on my 04 pumpkin.  I always use the battery tenders, however not during the summer riding season.   Some of you guys reporting 5+years blows me away  :nixweiss:
