Is there an upgrade over the stock 12 rear shocks?
« on: September 11, 2012, 01:50:47 PM »

I am trying to help a guy out and he is unhappy with overall ride of the bike. I am going to put in the HD Premium Ride Double Cartidge up front, but wondering about the rear. He is claiming to bottom out fully loaded on big trips and unhappy with ride. Does anyone have any recommendations on aftermarket? Progressive 440, 970 piggyback, 944 FST Ultra Touring shocks? Ohlins?

 Thanks for the help

What model bike is it?  There are a number of good rear shocks out there.  IMO, Bitubo's are really hard to beat, available through Taxxion Dynamics in GA...talk to Dan.  Ohlins have an excellent reputation, though I've not known anyone first hand that has tried them.  Suspension Technologies, Works, Legend Air Ride.  There are dozens of choices depending on what variables are involved.

Ultras have full height suspension under them, but SG's, RG Customs have a 1" lower rear end.

Is your friend putting enough air in the stock shocks?  They will still suck, regardless, but they shouldn't bottom out with enough air pressure in them.

Please check out Works Shocks. Top of the line billet product that actually works like magic. Very nice product that is custom made for your bike, weight, and riding style. Have to order them your self and give these specifics so Works can build them just for you. Nothing but the best there!!!!!

My recommendation si to call Howard at Motorcycle Metal and get either Ohlins or JRI shocks.  This guy is a suspension guru and will set everything up for you based on your weight and height and the bike will ride so much better you will not believe it.  You can contact him here.

Had 12 inch rear Ohlins installed on my SEEG at Ohlins tent at 2013 Bike Week Daytona.  Total custom fitting process.  $575 installed.  Gone is the back jamming effect when crossing rough surfaces, front end is more stable at higher speeds, and bike has no flex when cornering aggressively.  Such a change from the stock air shocks.  Wish I had done it sooner.  I'm also running standard Dunlop tires and Lyndall Gold+ brake pads.  Big difference over stock pads.  Hope this helps.   :orange:

Agree with Hogpro, Howard knows his stuff when it comes to suspension. He'll give you a discount on prices listed, all you have to do is register as a member at HDforums.

I got the Ohlin 6's from Howard about 9000  miles ago, absolutely fantastic and worth very dime (and they are quite a few of them...)

Go with the Ohlins from Howard.  I got the JRI 13" from Howard and I'm not impressed.  Not easily adjustable and not the improvement over Premium HD's that I was looking for.
