Oil spray on lower right side of motor
« on: September 12, 2012, 08:08:13 PM »

I have an 09 FLHTCUSE with 35000 miles. I have recently noticed that I am inconsistantly getting a fine film of oil on the lower right front side of engine. Oil gets on front exhaust pipe, oil filter, crankcase cover. It seems happen moStly when air temperaturen is > 90 degrees. All Attempts to loacte have been fruitless so far. Anyone else have this problem?

Have you recently changed the oil?  It could be residual oil from the spilled oil from removing your oil filter during an oil change.
It is not abnormal to find blow by oil from the air filter but this would not be found forward of the air filter like you are describing.
That would be on your aft exhaust header and not the forward and would not be found on the oil filter.

Check your oil filter is tight.  Then it seems I remember someone having something come loose on the oil cooler connections so check that.

If the oil is on the front of the engine case and blowing back from there, a very good place to look is the adaptor plate for the oil cooler.  The plate is attached to the oil filter mount on the case with the fitting that the filter is screwed onto.  If that fitting loosens, the adaptor plate can weep oil.  It has been a very common problem on the bikes with the late style oil cooler adaptor plate (2007 and later Big Twin).  If that's not it, take a good look at the oil cooler lines and the cooler itself, as well as the oil pressure sending unit.

Kcoop, I had that happen on my 09. In my case it was coming from the air filter housing and after a ride it would drip onto the right side of engine from the air filter cover, run down the chrome cam cover and drip from bottom of engine while on side stand. I had put too much in too much oil in motor and when I checked it cold on side stand it was almost to the full mark. I took the level down to the halfway mark on the dipstick (cold on sidestand) and the problem stopped. I also over oiled my K&N filter, but that cured itself.  New Motto: don't let anyone disctract you while you are filling your crankcase.CAHDBIKER

But you did not have oil on the front header and oil filter...this is most likely not be the same problem.

I haven't figured out yet how carryover oil from the air cleaner is getting on the front of the engine and the oil filter guys.  When mine used to blow oil out the A/C it wound up straight below the A/C and aft, not forward.  Unless of course there was a really ferocious tailwind. ;)

Had that fitting loosen up on me (number 7 in the diagram). the adapter plate base gasket was "seeping" and oil was in the exact locations the OP describes.

I have repaired 5 bikes for the same problem. It's the POS gasket between the oil cooler adapter and case.

I had the same problem and it was the oil lines behind the oil filter. Good luck

Thanks for everyones input. I got into it tonight to change the oil, pulled the oil filter off and found that the oil cooler backing plate had some play in it. I could move it back and forth about 1/8". It takes a hex driver to tighten, size I don't have, so I will pick one up tomorrow an tighten it up.

I have had the exact problem twice, and both just after having a dealer change the oil.  In each case, tightening the oil filter took care of the problem.  I am now doing my own oil changes and I turn it one full rotation after I can't go any further by hand.  I have not had the problem again.  In fact, it wasn't a problem the way it was until I would ride over 90 mph and that's when I would see the light oil spray to the right front of the engine and the exhaust pipe just to the inside of the floorboards.  The adaptor was not loose at all on mine, just the filter.
