Radio without amp
« on: September 16, 2012, 05:35:52 PM »

I have a 09SERG that was not wired for anything extra in the way of sound whatsoever.I installed J&M speakers which are 2 ohm and I want to add 2 Boom saddlebag speakers and have the radio reset to open up the other 2 speaker channels. Will the radio in itself have enough to power all four speakers .And does it have to go to the dealer to reset the radio for the extra speakers.I already went through the xm interface problems and I want to make sure I am not opening another can of worms.

Hey Randy,
Yes, you will have to take the bike to a dealer to 'flash' the radio. Research indicates the rear outputs are active but the fader is permanently set for full volume on the front speakers. The 'flash' activates the fader for proper front/rear speaker control.

You could use the H-K rear outputs to power a set of saddlebag speakers. Basically you would have an 'Ultra-Like' setup without the tourpak pods. Just make sure you select the correct impedance speaker (2 ohms). The power output from the standard stereo is a bit limited. Many guys are already complaining about the lack of volume from saddlebag speakers on the SESG with the stock unit. To make any sound system on these bikes 'shine' you need another amp. Do a search in this section and you will find lots examples. Next to exhaust systems I think stereos are the next most popular upgrade on a motorcycle.

Rear outputs are active without fader flashed.
Default settings are balanced front to rear (both full on)

Interesting. Plenty of bikers on other forums have stated otherwise. And the postings were recent (2012).

Jerry Thank you for the info,I was told the HK would power 4 speakers without an amp but I haven't talked to anyone on any volume issues from the saddlebag speakers.I was trying to avoid an amp if I could ,between lids, speaker kit, wiring harness and paint price tag around 900.00.Alot to pay for 2 more speakers.I will check more on volume issues

Randy,
Don't get me wrong, the standard H-K unit will power 4 speakers. However, I suspect you won't hear much from the saddlebag speakers due to the limited power output from the standard radio. I completely understand the cost issues. Just wanted you to know the pros and cons.
