Motorcycles, Musician, Infantry..........part of the price of admission.  :P har.  spyder

...and loud cars and machine tools and air tools in close proximity; aircraft engines, fireworks, loud parties, loud women and other uncontrolled detonations.  Good lord we were stupid when we were young.  Good thing it was all fun or we'd be really bitchy about it all today!  :drink: :2vrolijk_21:

Have tried that approach Lou.  It works swimmingly; some of the time.  Can get a guy in trouble though.

Where I'm screwed is places with background noise.  Can hear well and do great on hearing tests because the room is clean.  But in a bar or somelace like that I can't pick the local conversation out of all the background noise.  God knows what chit I agree to sometimes.

Same problem for me Don, with the additional "problem" that if the TV is on a programme that I'm watching, I can't hear the Mrs.  ;)

Yep, me too.  I hear the cicadas & crickets all the time.  I can still hear pretty well, until I get in a situation where there is a lot of background noise.... like a restaurant.  I catch myself leaning in &/or turning my ear toward the person speaking to hear the conversation.
I don't have any trouble sleeping.  I grew up & live out away from town, so during the warm months the cicadas & crickets are there to sing me to sleep.... now, I have that song year round & no matter where I am.

I have been around firearms, chainsaws, motorcycles, hot rod cars, outboard motors, & rock & roll music all my life.  however, I am not exactly sure that is what caused it.
My mother has the same problem and she has been the "June Clever" type housewife all her life... never around anything loud.

It sucks and I would be very interested in a cure, but I ain't letting it slow me down  ;)

Talk about timing, , ,
This may not be the best time to bring this up, , , BUT, ,
The year, 2008
The state, North Carolina
The city, Maggie Valley
The location, Legends Sports Bar
The scene, Noisy sports bar with Don, Chip and Nancy having drinks and a bite to eat.
The discussion, "Don, Hey guys I just picked up this really cool project bike." "Chip, what is it?"
"Don, it's a 2002 Red SERK." "Nancy, WOW, what you going to do with it?" "Don, well you know me, I like the chase, the build and the finish."
"Nancy, That's nice Don, you going to keep it when done?" "Don, I don't know, I can give it to you Nancy if you want it." "Nancy, REALLY?"
"Don, SURE, you know what a nice guy I am." "Chip, bartender, get Don another drink."

As I said, this may not be the best time to bring this up, but FYI, Nancy flies USAir for free, when schedule permits she can do a fly and ride and pick it up.

I did allot of research on this topic before posting. I know there is no real cure but I didn't realise that their were so many of us that are affected.  I still hear well which is normal according to the numerous web sites but I was hoping that something unorthodox would help.  I used to get on my porch in the evening on my log home and look out towards the pond and the noise in the summer was deafening from tree frogs etc.  now it will be winter and there will not be anymore just absolute quiet.  Years ago I saw a special that had William Shatner and thought that must be a real bummer to have to live like that.  I could never stand loud music and was always a longbow/recurve bowhunter so no guns.  Just the SERK and stubbornness to wear ear plugs right from the beginning.

Thanks for all the responses, maybe someday there will be a cure.

When I had mine diagnosed, the ear specialist said he'd suffered from it himself for 15 years, and he was confident that a cure would not be too far off.  He also said that it has been found an injection of lidocaine directly into the middle ear could stop tinnitus symptoms for around 20 minutes, which is a good step in the research.

I too am a member of this elite club..... I've had it for about 10 years but only diagnosed for about 4.  Tried homeopathic wastes of $$$.  I now ride with an ear plug in hopes that some how the constant ringing will be lessened. (have a 2-1 exhaust).  I also have to use a "white noise machine" for sleeping to balance the constant ring.

had it as long as I can remember like 5 or 6 years old, don't know what happend to me as a kid musta bumped my head and adult life has all been very noisey work and play but check this out, A few years ago I was on a jet talking with an ear doctor sitting next to me we talked about this and he said that I no longer hear the high notes the way one should and that wearing the proper hearing aid will in time retrain the ear to work better, he said the amplifier will force the ear to hear the high frequency stuff and it'l probably begin to become receptive to these sounds and retrain itself, he said it's not hopeless.  I asked what the ringing sound was and he said nothing its a sound kinda manufacterd by the body.  this guy was a high end kinda ear doctor I think from Beverly Hills his last name was  Kieley    If theres any truth to this of course it would mean getting away from the damaging noises and for most of us that would probably mean a major change of life,  like others on this thread say  does'nt bother me till I think about it.

All of the above (except for the conversation at the rip off bar), for as long as I can remember.

And you can throw in Federal "Q" sirens and air horns operated by over zealous "operators"
