FLHTCUSE7 Noise from Hydraulic Clutch
« on: September 18, 2012, 05:12:39 PM »

Hello, just had my SE7 for a month now and from cold the gearchange is fins, until the motor heats up.  When at normal temp, a rattling noise begins to appear from around the area where the bleed nipple is for the clutch.  Sound like a chrome cover loose - but it ain't.  If I pull in the Clutch lever (in neutral) the noise dissapears, let it out and the rattle comes back.  Just got back from dealer today over here in Scotland and they took timing chain cover off to check all torque correctly on clutch side and could find nothing loose.  They agree it does not sound right, a noise coming on as engine reaches normal temp and will submit a technical request to HD.  Anyone out there got this on there's?  By the way, I know they are noisy, this is my 3rd Ultra and I have a Rocker with a 6 speed that don't make this noise.  Would be grateful for any knowledge sharing out there, thanks.

In this instance it really is totally "normal" in these bikes with a hydraulic clutch.  Called "neutral rollover" or something like that.  Can't give you the specifics why though.  Others maybe can.  I have a '12 FLHXSE3 and it does it but I no longer notice it since I no longer concern myself with it.  I say ride on.

Per H-D the noise is caused by the stack up of tolerances in the first gear pair.  Those are still straight cut gears, not helical.  I'm not convinced that is really the full story, but Harley rarely tells us the real story.  It probably also has to do with the poor design, execution, and tolerance of the trans shaft bearings in the trap door.  They supposedly reduced the radial runout tolerance for those bearings for 2012; obviously with continuing complaints on 2012 models they still haven't solved the issue.

Calling stuff normal is what Harley does best.  While it may be normal to them, it's not necessarily acceptable to a lot of customers.  Other companies I'm familiar with have taken action when surveys and other feedback show significant dissatisfaction with a particular item, and even though the item was technically "in spec" they fixed it in future models.  That's what companies in highly competitive markets do to improve customer satisfaction.  If you're in a market like Harley, they obviously don't think they have any competition and thus don't have to respond to customer dissatisfaction.  The fact that so many Harley owners bitch and moan about all the quality issues and lousy customer service, but go right back and buy another one, tends to allow them to get away with their cavalier attitude.

Anyhow, to make a long story short, Harley will not authorize a dealer to make repair attempts to correct the neutral rattle.  You will need to learn to cope with it.  Most of us Harley riders have learned to cope with much worse stuff.

It never ceases to amaze me the level of knowledge on this site.  I don't notice the neutral rattle but it's interesting to read about.  It's not my issue but thanks for the service bulletin d00d....much appreciated... :2vrolijk_21:

By the way, I know they are noisy, this is my 3rd Ultra

Welcome to the world of the 110, which is much, much worse, noise wise, than any of your previous Ultras.  You're also going to find that quality has plumetted since your last one, too, (as I recall all your previous ones were not CVOs?) as parts are increasingly made in China, and HD search and search for ever cheaper manufacturers.  The price, however, has rocketed to a level - not just for the bikes, but for the parts too - where HD UK are simply ripping us off; completely taking the p*ss.  You know how many I've had - I bought 3 CVO Ultras in 3 years, if you recall - but I won't be buying another.  Don & staff are gems, and will obviously help you out above and beyond the call of duty - you know that already.  And I hope your experience with your new bike is a very happy one, but be prepared for the unexpected.  :(
