Noise because of wider tire on 2011 Street Glide
« on: September 19, 2012, 10:18:34 PM »

I posted earlier about a noise I was hearing like a bearing failing or maybe a tire separating. It is noticeable at speed especially on a left hand lean. It is at the dealers now and they road tested the bike and told me the noise has to do with the fact that because of the wider tire the belt is sitting in a narrower back sprocket and the belt is riding higher and is rubbing especially on a left lean. The head mechanic says this noise is normal and all the new bikes with the wider tire are like this. I am having a hard time believing this especially since I cannot find anyone speaking of this on this forum. I did not notice the sound when the bike was new but with 9000 miles is is becoming much more noticeable. Some imput would be much appreciated.

With 9 K on the bike have you inspected the rear tire to see if there is any cupping. This can cause the noise you describe.

My tire was howling big time. It was pretty well worn at 10500 miles. Picked up a nail so i replaced it and no more howl. Did i mention it cost $350 bucks

Like the others I had the same thing on my two CVO's.  I had 17k miles and changed the tires and all is well.

I agree with Jim, look at the rear tire.  A small amount of cupping when leaned over will make the tire growl at you.  I get it every time I get to anout 6000 miles on my 06 CVO with Metzlers on it.  Doesn't matter much as I only get another 1000 miles & the tire is worn out.

On our 09 I noticed it with the Dunlops at about 9 or 10k miles.  Changed out the tires at 12500 and now changed them out again to Metzlers so I only had about 5k on the 2nd set of Dunlops, no noise at that point.

Tire Cupping For Sure!

I use the cupping growl as a gauge of how far I'm leaning into the corner ;D

Thank you for the imput. I am wondering how come the diagnosis wasn't available from the Harley shop. The cupping must be undetectable visually, I cannot see anything wrong looking at it. What should the tread wear be at when you gauge the tire. Do you automatically change out the tire at a certain gauge number.
