On my 04 I have used syn3 since day one.   Never really had any problems.  75k are on the clock and still running strong. On my '12 sg, I am using mobil 1.  I heard good things about it and would only use synthetic.   Hot down here where I live.    And that 110?  Hot!!!!

I'm back to dino oil too. Lifter bearings went out at 30,000 and cost me a new engine for $5K. Was using Amsoil. I have a hard time believing it was the oil. But had 45K mi on my 03 with dino oil and regular changes and no problems. Go figure.

I can't fault anyone for trying something different with so many of us having lifter failure on 110's.
I too believe it is not the oil, as much as it is an issue with 110 lifters.
In all fairness the people comparing any older HD with anything other than a 110 are fooling themselves.
This is not your '06 or '04 103.  And no matter how many miles or what oil you ran in it this is Harleys 110.  Not the same.
JMO but I think anyone who has spent enough time here would realize anything past 20,000miles on a stock HD lifter in a 110 is ticking time bomb.

Did someone say that it was a oil related problem? If so, I am sure Amsoil would have liked to look into that.
Since they will cover any oil related break downs. Under their warranty.http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g1363.pdf

Oh that is correct. I have 2500 miles on my new 110. If I have time this winter I am going to tear into the cam cavity and upgread EVERYTHING!!!! Oh and that will include oil pump and cam plate. Extended warranty or not. I think it is chaep insurance. I don't want to be left on the side of the road and having my bike sit at the dealer for a few months while they fight with the MOTHER COMPANY about warranty coverage!!!!

I am an Amsoil Dealer. If it was oil related they would have covered the repairs PERIOD!!!!! Now just because the mechanic said it was oil related does not mean it was. They would have looked at all of the parts and did an oil analysis to be sure!!!!!

So those of you with THE GREAT HARLEY DAVIDSON 110 MOTOR, go ahead and run dino. Let us know how that works out for you in the future!!!!!

 :nixweiss: :nixweiss:
Has anyone noticed the difference in weight from the stock headpipe to the Fullsac X pipe? I didn't weigh them but there is a several pound difference.
... :nixweiss: :nixweiss:
is it most likely because the fullsac and fuel moto do NOT  hae the heavy catalyst in them??? :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:
that being said...I am VERY happy with the set up on mine!

OK I don't have the 110, but my 103 only takes 3.5 qt's! Have they changed it to 5 qts?
I'm a total believer in syn oil, been using it in everyting I've owned since Mobil 1  came out
way back in 69 I believe!

The best oil in the world (we'll all be dead before u figure that one out) can't lubricate cheap, inferior parts that HD likes to use ... amazing how they try to pass the buck.

BACAGrizz, I read your post and all the responses so maybe I missed it, but what cams use and did you  switch to the .030 Cometic head gasket. I only have 17,000 on my 09, but if I still have it at 25 K I will have the cam chest opened  to check and see what's going on in there. CAHDBIKER

Lifer went out in my 09 CVO SERG at 41K.  syn3 oil.  I am sure it is not the oil.

My wifes 09 Heritage has 85K on it, using syn3.  Lifters are just fine as is the rest of the motor.

Seems the vast majority of lifter failures I hear about are in the 110, not the 88, 96, or 103.

I went with the complete Fullsac Stage II and used the Andrews 54 and Cometic gaskets.  HD Syn 3 for it's entire life..  I think the oil is part of the problem of it wearing out so soon.

I'm wondering about roller lifters in a low rpm engine anyway. Sure a rolling surface offers lower resistance but the main benefit is normally with higher rpm engines. It's cool to reduce friction but if H-D can't get it right then why not go to a flat tappet lifter. If the ramp is too agressive then I can see a roller lifter but those cams are normally used in racing applications.

BACAGrizz, I have a Fulsac Stage one now and am completely happy with it. However, when I think at about 25k(providing I still have the bike) I will have the cam chest opened up and checked out. If there are any issues I will also switch to Andrews 54 cams as long they don't cause me to loose any of the bottom end grunt of the 255's. Did you notice anything like that. I usually ride two up with luggage. Thanks CAHDBIKER
