Replacing my lifters
« on: September 21, 2012, 09:34:58 PM »

2009 SERG and over 18K on the clock. I opted out of the extended warranty when I bought the bike so, call me chicken, el-cheapo, paranoid, or whatever you want, but I'm not taking the chance on sending shavings through the oil pump when/if the a lifter roller goes out.  Thought of waiting until mid-Winter but we're planning on riding to Panama City next month so it's time to get it done.  My bike has never shown any of the noisy symptoms that some of the folk complain about in here but there are too many unexpected failures to suit my comfort level.

S&S lifters with travel limiters.

Thought this was a little interesting,  notice how the lifter was rubbing the bore, in a bad way.

Hopefully this post will help someone in the future but let me encourage you to not forget about including your cowbells and springs on the push rod tubes when you put everything  back together...

I followed the S&S instructions for adjusting the push rods and it seemed awfully loose after shortening the rod an extra turn after seating the valve.  Ended up with approximately 1/2 turn to keep from having lash.

Will fire it up after cleaning all the oil and fingerprints later today.

can the stock pushrods be used with s&s lifters?

the hd b lifters are all gone and it "appears" that s&s lifters are the least drama & near the same price as hd lifters - but i always hated dealing with adjustable pushrods on my 77 and id rather just lift the tank. i want to change out the throttle cables & deal with the too low handlebars at the same time.

this winter ill be over 30k so im going to do quite a bit of preventive maint and some very close inspections of things like the swing arm bushings, wheel bearings, lifters, cam chain shoes, inner cam bearings - all cheap stuff that takes a lot of hours to deal with.

Well, this is my first experience with S&S lifters but I'm beginning to wonder if it wasn't the wrong move. Started the bike this evening and it sounded like a JD A model. It was pecking so loud in comparison to the stock lifters that I was afraid I'd done something wrong so I readjusted the push rods but it is still noisy. I let it idle for several minutes at ~2k rpm hoping they needed to pump up but it is fiercely loud.
Have I done something wrong? Are all S&S lifters this loud?

Adjusted them to Zero lash then 4 turns(.1252) and let it bleed for at least 20 minutes. Backed them off until the valve seated(~turn and a half), then an additional turn.

The S&S lifters are noisey at first but do quiet down after a few miles of riding, as long as they are adjusted properly. My new 113" with a TR625 cam was VERY noisy as you described in the shop during the initial heat cycles. On the first ride they quieted down and now have NO valve train noise.

That makes me feel much better. I felt rotten last night after hearing that thing run.
I'll get the bike down and run it this week. Thanks for the reply Jim, that's encouraging.

Are all S&S lifters this loud?

NO! :o
I put a set in Friday, never soaked them. Started the bike, after a few seconds of clatter it was quiet. Went 420 miles Sunday with out a tick. I always had a stock lifter noise come and go.
Oil holes away from the crank?
These S&S lifters are quiet.    S E quick install push rods adjusted 21/2 turns after contact.

Yes sir, oil holes facing out.  These were the S&S with travel limiters.  The adjusting procedure is a bit different.  I'm encouraged by the replies, just need to quit working all the time and ride the bike to get them pumped up.
Thanks for the reply.

Don't know a thing about Gaterman's, but you can't go wrong with S&S lifters...

Im trying a set of gaterman. So far so good. Looks like a quality item and design. no pic but instead of one oil hole on the body there are 3,plus a oiling port at retainer and oiling port at the axle.  Plus they are directional going in only one way. I had a bad feuling hp+ that didnt want to pump up sometimes. Havnt had a chance to run it hard in the heat but will soon.

My S&S lifters were also VERY noisey until I put some miles on the bike then they quieted down. Been good ever since.
