The rear Dunflop has crapped out at 7k . . . Kind of surprised, but I know that is typical.  Front tire looks great, but both tires are original and now 10 years old.

Decided to go with the Michelin Commander II.  The stock dunlop on the '03 Screamin' Eagle Road King is the MT90B16 74, a "130" from what I can tell.

Been reading and some seem to be implying in posts I have reac that I could put a 140 on the rear if I went with the Michelin Commander II . . . Evidently made a little thinner than the stock Dunlop?

Anybody have any experience with the Commander IIs and going a little wider than stock when replacing the rear tire and swapping from stock Dunlop to Michelin Commander II?

I put a 140 Commander II on the rear of my 05 SEEG but I don't know if that translates to it would work on your SERK.

What was the stock size on your 05 SEEG, a 130?

Front:  D402F MT90B16 (I think converts to 130/90)
Rear:   D402 MU85B16 (I think converts to 140/90)

Was a good question..didn't register with me that you stated the size, was just thinking about the application.  Duh..I need a cup o' coffee.   :-[

Wider belt and pulley on the 03 than on the 05.  So it's no a direct comparison.  More room on the 05.

I've seen 140s on bikes with the 1.5" belts.  Some rubbed and some didn't.  Most did.  A little trimming on the belt guard will likely do the trick though (that's what you rub first).

As noted by Twolane, the width of the belt was reduced between 2003 and 2005 models, so you can't go by what would fit on the 2005.  You will need to make some measurements with the stock tire in place and then calculate if there is enough room to safely fit the 140/90B16 Commander II in there.  You need to leave some extra clearance between the tire and belt/guard, since the tire can grow both in diameter and width in operation.  The Commander II is approximately 0.40 inches wider than the stock MT90 btw.

Since you started with a 140 stock, no help tome since you stayed 140

I am looking for someone to verify who started with a stock Dunlop 130 and them went to the 140 size in the Michelin Commander II with no fitment issues.

Have seen several bikes with 1.5" belts and 140 tires.  Some, but not all, needed the belt guard trimmed back a bit.  It's never been an absolute.  Maybe you'll have to cut the belt guard a bit and maybe you won't.

Thanks, Twolanerider . . . Well, sounds like I better stay with the same 130 Commander II to be safe.

Just had been bumping into tire posts saying a 130 Michelin Commander II was not as wide as a Dunlop 130 because of a difference in the sidewalls.  Thought I might get a Michelin 140 in there where the 130 Dunlop has been without any tweaks.  Does not sound like I can definitely do it. Since my dealer is twice the cost for the Commander IIs, I will buy them online, so no sense taking a chance.  Not going to be able to return the tire if it did not fit.

Thanks everybody.

And, twolanerider, thanks for the size graph.

Measuring, links like there is .5" to play in there, so the .40" 140 will just be cutting it too close.  Going to get the 130 Commander IIs . . . Thanks for saving me from perhaps ordering the wrong thing!

If you don't want to take the chance of having to trim back the plastic belt guard that's the smart call.

I have never been real smart, so I will definitely stay with stock size.  :-).  Thanks.

What about taking the belt guard off all together when putting a 140 on to replace the 130.  Do you see that causing any problems?

Know a few that have run without the guard.  Personally I'd trim a little on the plastic before I'd lose it altogether.  But it's something that used to be done more commonly than one might first guess now.

If you actually have .5" of clearance from your stock tire to the belt guard, then the 140 should be OK.  You only count 1/2 of the .40" width difference between the two tires, so .5" minus .2" still leaves .3" clearance.
