my 06 SEUC has problems
« on: September 22, 2012, 11:08:27 PM »

My 06 FLHTCUSE has some problems.

5,000 miles on her when I brought her home last month, about 8,500 now.

As far as I can tell there are no modifications on the bike except the 6-speed tranny.  I removed the V&H rounds and put NIB oem muffs on right after I bought her.

We put about 900 miles on the bikes the past 3 days in 90 degree weather.

The bike runs fine in 1-2-3-4 gear.  In 5-6 gear the bike runs fine up to about 2600 rpm.  Anything higher and it pings so bad that I ease off the throttle.

If Im running in 6th gear at 70-75 mph on the interstate and I come up on even a slight hill or want to increase speed to pass, I have to downshift into 5th.  As soon as I increase the throttle in 6th the pinging starts.  In 5th I have to slowly increase throttle or the pinging starts.  If its 90+ degrees it pings like crazy, not as bad if its cooler, but still way to bad.

The only way I can use 6th gear is to slowly get up to about 3100 rpm in 5th, then shift into 6th.  It runs better if I ride it like it has a 5 speed, but it still pings.

I currently have a 07 RKC and have had a 08 FatBob, 08 SE Dyna, and an 09 FLHT, none of them have had this problem.

I dont know what the PO did to the bike, but I dont think any engine work was done.

Surely, the bike didnt run like this from the MOCO?

Suggestions?

This is the same thing that my bike does a CVO SGSE 110.  At around 2500 to 3000 if I open up the throttle it just pings.  I downshift and all is good.  It is just one of those things.

You may want to consider a Dyno tune.

Your bike and the OP's bike need to be tuned. There's no reason to accept pinging in any gear above 2000 rpm with  premium fuel and a properly tuned engine.

Im having a hard time believing the bike ran this way new, so why does it run this way now?

You changed mufflers????? Did you remap the bike???? What kind of fuel injection management does the bike have??? Are you running premium fuel???? There are a lot questions that need to be addressed. You need to remap the bike. It is running to lean.

I'll comment since I have an 06 since new.

They didn't run that way stock, they don't run that way with AC & Pipes BUT, you have to tune it for what parts you are running.  Remember this is an open loop system, no O2 Sensors to help.  My guess the previous owner had HD download some HD map into it because of the mufflers.

Decide what you want on it for AC & pipes, get them installed then get a TTS & get it tuned.  You will be very happy.  My 06 new with just SE AC & SE Mufflers (not the stock mufflers) made 94H 101T after Bob in Haward worked his magic on it.

If I was just doing AC & Mufflers today I would still just use the SE AC and I would use the stock CVO mufflers but pull the CAT Baffles out & put Fullsac 1 3/4" Baffles in it & TTS Tune it.

As far as I can tell the bike is 100% OEM except for the 6 speed.  I removed the aftermarket muffs and put the correct OEM muffs on.  I did address these issues in my first post.  Again, I far as I can tell the bike is 100% OEM except for the 6 speed.

Unfortunately you don't know if the MAP was changed for the mufflers.

One other thought, see what spark plugs it is running.  If they are the thin wire SE plugs or some brand other than HD they could contribute to the issue.

In my 06 I can only run the stock HD plug, if I try anything else it does not run right.  Two friend in the last month have had pinging issues after they changed to the SE plugs, put the stock plugs back in and pinging was gone.

Literally "right after."  So you don't know if the detonation problem existed with the other mufflers?

It's doubtful that a change from one set of slip-ons to another made that much difference.  But it is the one thing you've changed that you could easily isolate.

Put the other mufflers back on and ride it.  If the detonation problem is significantly better you know it had been tuned somehow and is now dialed in in a way that doesn't play well with your OEM mufflers.  Easy to do.  Doesn't cost anything and it effectively isolates a potential question.

The six sp alone would be enough to require some tuning. The ratio of the sixth gear was never intended for the stock tune which runs very lean to start with. The bike needs to be tuned.  That's the first place to start.

I had a lot of decel poping and backfiring with the V&H muffs.

Im going to replace the plugs and clean the air filter and double check for a tuner, but I didnt see one anywhere when I had the seat and side covers off.

I think I will go with a PCV retrofit if I have to have a tuner and go with a canned tune until I find someone local that can do a tune for me.

A tuner would generally not be visible on the bike. Essentially it is software and a separate device that would generally NOT be kept attached to the bike (PV being a notable exception). However I would have expected the previous owner to provide the key and software when you bought the bike if it had TTS or SEPST.

I dont think it has a tune.  If it does whoever downloaded it should be shot.  The PO just didnt ride the bike, 5k in 7 years of ownership.  He traded it on a whim, he was in the dealer with his kid, saw a 12 SE and traded.

I will get it sorted out.  Im just surprised that the bike runs so poorly.  If I ride it like a 5 speed and keep the speed to 55-60 mph it runs great.  Anything beyond that and it runs like crap.
